Album Review

As U2 were completing the supporting tour for The Unforgettable Fire, they released the four-track EP Wide Awake in America. Comprised of two outtakes ("Three Sunrises," "Love Comes Tumbling") and two live cuts ("Bad" and a phenomenal version of "A Sort of Homecoming"), the record may be aimed at the hardcore collector. Even so, most U2 fans will find it necessary, since the two rejects are actually stronger than about half of The Unforgettable Fire, and the live cuts again demonstrate U2's undeniable talent for captivating concerts.

Best £4 ever spent in 1987

Absolutely with a shadow of a doubt the best snapshot of U2 when they were at their best. Mystical, full of energy and still coming to fruition. Amazing times! I managed to buy the album for £4 (second hand) and it has been one of the best investments ever. Classic. Rgds, Mike

classic u2

probably the best recording of bad other than live aid in 85. not 1987 as a reviewer has said. the 2 live tracks were actually recorded in 84. bad was recorded in birmingham 12/11/84. homecoming 3 days later at soundcheck in london with the crowd added in later for effect. fact.

If there are any new U2 fans about then you should definitely get this album. This is 1987 when Bono's voice was its most powerful and evocative. The band have matured since then and the more recent live stuff is more cultured in many ways. However Bono has never sung so well as on this album. Listen and enjoy. You won't be disappointed.

Through a combination of zealous righteousness and post-punk experimentalism, U2 became one of the most popular rock & roll bands in the world -- equally known for their sweeping sound as for their grandiose statements about politics and religion. The Edge provided the group with a signature sound by creating sweeping sonic landscapes with his heavily processed, echoed guitars. Though the Edge's style wasn't conventional, the rhythm section of Larry Mullen, Jr. and Adam Clayton played the songs...
