iTunes Review

Together and apart, Aaron, Art, Cyril and Charles Neville had been making music for decades before they released Yellow Moon in 1989. But this album was unlike anything these New Orleans legends had ever recorded before. With the aid of producer Daniel Lanois, the brothers finally captured the voodoo-drenched essence of their soulful sound. The Nevilles' mesmerizing harmonies are surrounded by atmospheric tracks that mix simmering Creole funk with '80s ambient rock. Lyrically, the album's well-chosen songs reach back deeply into African-American history. "My Blood" invokes the brothers' ancestral roots, while "Sister Rosa" celebrates civil rights activist Rosa Parks. "A Change is Gonna Come" resonates with gospel grace. And when Aaron takes the lead on Bob Dylan's "With God on My Side," he sings with the angelic voice of Justice itself. At once traditional and innovative, Yellow Moon lets the Neville Brothers shine with bayou brilliance.

Yellow Moon - Start your Neville Brothers discovery here

This record is simply unmatched when it comes to capturing the groove that is New Orleans. If you have never caught any of the brothers' work, or not seen them live, then start here. When I first heard this music played live (after a few snippets of a few tracks on the radio) I was totally blown away. If you hear a more original, gut grabbing, emotive or soulful sound out there then please let me know!!! Yellow Moon (title track) then Fire on the Bayou (from the eponymous album), then Daniel Lanois' (the producer of this album) "Acadie" and you will be converted. Take it from there back through the Meters' work and back again - a whole groovy world waits for you. Enjoy!

Throughout their long careers as both solo performers and as members of the group that bore their family name, the Neville Brothers proudly carried the torch of their native New Orleans' rich R&B legacy. Although the four siblings — Arthur, Charles, Aaron, and Cyril — did not officially unite under the Neville Brothers aegis until 1977, all had crossed musical paths in the past, while also enjoying success with other unrelated projects: Eldest brother Art was the first to tackle a...
