Album Review

This delicate psychedelic pop group from Osaka deals in the kind of tranquil sparse songs that draw on the Velvet Underground, Nick Drake, and Tim Buckley. The duo of Shinji Shibayama and Masako Takeda are joined by various guests, including Maher Shalal Hash Baz members Naoki Zushi, Tori Kudo, Hiro Nakazaki, and Ikuro Takahashi. Filling out the delicate songs with avant-garde embellishments, the group creates beautiful juxtapositions of juvenile pop sensibilities and complex textures. Swinging between joy and melancholy, a folk feel dominates this album, calling to mind Tokyo contemporaries Ghost in their impassioned take on psychedelic folk. Sharing similar tastes for acoustic instrumentation, Nagasi Ni Te creates an elaborate set of lo-fi pop gems, making for a striking and accomplished album overall.
