Album Review

Evidently, Brian Setzer doesn't take the jump blues and swing of the Brian Setzer Orchestra as a joke. Dirty Boogie is his third album with his large band, and instead of sounding tired, the record is the group's best effort yet. Setzer rocks the band hard, tearing through blues and rock & roll covers with vigor, and delivering made-to-order originals that are surprisingly well crafted and memorable. Much attention will be paid to "You're the Boss," a cover of the Elvis Presley/Ann Margaret staple from Viva Las Vegas, performed as a duet with No Doubt's Gwen Stefani, but that's hardly the only highlight here — it's a swinging, rocking record that suggests Setzer's skills are only improving with time.

Some of Setzer's finest work

"Jump Jive An' Wail" rocketed The Brian Setzer Orchestra to the mainstream conscience in the UK in the late 90s, and the album it came from became something of a cult classic. And rightly so - the band's never sounded so slick, well-orchestrated and downright fun. True, the album strays a little from Setzer's Rockabilly roots and towards big band swing, but I rather like that. However, those of you who've followe Setzer since his Stray Cats days might not be such fans of this swing revival direction he takes on this album. Rockabilly roots can still be heard on a fair few of the tracks, though. I think he gets the balance just right, personally. From the fun, upbeat numbers like "This Cat's On A Hot Tin Roof" and "Jump Jive An' Wail" to the slower, more cocktail-y "Hollywood Nocturne" and "Sleepwalk", from the the epic "Rock This Town" to the raunchy "You're The Boss" (a duet with Gwen Stefani, who puts in a great performance), the album hasn't a single weak track on it. I listened to it so much in the few years after it came out that the CD broke (oops)!

Swing, Guitar, Tunes

The title says it all. Brilliant fun.
