Outer Space and Beyond.

First released in 1972, this album takes the concept and ideas explored on Alpha Centauri from 1971 and develops them to a impassable conclusion. Zeit (originally a double vinyl album) contains 4 pieces of atmospheric "space rock" which combine to form 75 minutes of mood music in which absolutely nothing happens. There is no rhythm or propulsion, no melody, nothing even remotely resembling a conventional structure. For 75 trance inducing hypnotic minutes this record takes music on a journey to the very outer edges of the cosmos.

Commencing with 8 minutes of 4 cellos creating an unearthly siren like call, the 4 pieces then drift into ever sparser minimilistic soundscapes in which the effects and pulses become ever more distant and ever more subtle until they are barely discernable to the human ear. Heard late at night with headphones, this music can transport you into the deepest recesses of your imagination.

I only stumbled across this 2 years ago, but have been playing it incessently ever since. I cannot describe in mere words the hypnotic grip it has on me and I severely doubt whether there will be too many people out there who will agree with me. If you have a (very) open mind and have an interest in finding out where Bowie & Eno found their inspiration to explore ambient electronica then I suggest you start a musical education with this out on the edge of nowhere symphony of silence.

There are only 2 true cosmic albums and this is one of them (the other being Alpha Centauri). I first heard this in the summer of 1973 and have been returning ever since.

It lacks the spaciness of Alpha Centauri but paints pictures in your mind through the spaces it leaves open.

Once they discovered the accursed sequencer Tangerine Dream quickly deteriorated into muzak-makers turning out aural wallpaper to order. But for three years at the start of the 1970s they were pushing the boundaries and were, on Alpha Centauri and Zeit, truly kosmische. Ironically, with the exception of Electronic Meditation, these are the least synth/driven albums in their canon but the ideas that zip, tumble and float transform the traditional instrumentation. Ethereal is the best way to describe Zeit.

Without doubt, the recordings of Tangerine Dream made the greatest impact on the widest variety of instrumental music during the 1980s and '90s, ranging from the most atmospheric new age and space music to the harshest abrasions of electronic dance. Founded in 1967 by Edgar Froese in Berlin, the group progressed through a full three dozen lineups (Froese being the only continuous member with staying power) and four distinct stages of development: the experimentalist minimalism of the late '60s and...
