Heroic innocence

The beloved stars of Hong Kong's nascent indie-pop scene, My Little Airport are the angel-voiced Nicole and the prodigiously talented P, who absorbs the sounds of bedsit dreamers new and old (Belle and Sebastian, Saint Etienne, Field Mice, My Bloody Valentine) and gives them an internationalist East-meets-West twist. The duo use sweet and innocent musical forms to talk about not-so-innocent subject matters – their songs are deceptively twee, sing-along pop nuggets about callous love and dawning sexuality among the young and disenfranchised. The faux-naif, enchanted mood reminds you a bit of the film The Virgin Suicides, with the preciousness offset by a French New Wave bohemian irony. Recorded with a seemingly inexhaustible bag of endearing retro production effects (the songs are all self-produced), and sung in witty Cantonese or intentionally quirky Chinglish, the songs in this winning compilation represent the heroic efforts of a grassroots band amid a relentlessly commercial and formulaic Hong Kong corporate pop machine.

very pleasant

This is the compilation of some of the songs from the first 2 albums by My Little Airport, a Hong Kong based lo-fi electronic band. There are some really nice songs although the best are from the first record (The OK Thing To Do On Sundays Is To Toddle In The Zoo) which I would recommend buying instead of this compilation, that's if you can get hold of a copy. Once you get past the Cantonese lyrics, you can't fail to be charmed by every moment of this quirky band.

Even more whimsical and playful than typical soft bands fitting the indie mold — say, Belle & Sebastian — many of their songs are comprised of inside jokes and lighthearted abandonment. With lyrics that read like pages from a diary, their wit shines through in song titles like "Leo, Are You Still Jumping Out of Windows in Expensive Clothes" and...
