Customer Reviews
Well done to the dev
I don't normally write reviews for games but the nature of this has turned my head somewhat. I believe the developer deserves massive congratulations for this game - unlike anything I have played in the modern era. Managing to get something to work in the 21st century that would not look out of place in the 80's on a ZX Spectrum or C64 - a make it a success - is no easy task.
The game started out for me being a boredom killer, progressively attracting my attention away from daily duties to finally earning my interest over my child! It became impossible to put down after processing the imagery in my head - something akin to a well written book.
I must say, however, without spoiling too much (I hope, and apologies if you read into this too much) - the ending, being identical to that of its prequel, is the game's only let down. It's a small issue given the length of time you spend playing the game but one which I believe could be improved for future extensions to the storyline in the series.
Addictive
One of the best iphone games I've ever played. The post apocalyptic existentialist story is engaging and really stays with you even after completion. Perfect level of difficulty, I loved the challenge of working things out myself because there weren't any instructions or 'tutorials'. The story was told elegantly through a really minimal stripped back black and white text based interface that I've come to love. The sparse feel of the game may phase you at first, and it can get a bit repetitive when you start collecting resources, but keep playing because it gets so good towards the end! Loved the ending, will be replaying again to see if I can beat it in a different way. Worth every penny. Have also just downloaded the prequel :)
Give it time
When I first played 'A Dark Room', it was hard not to feel a bit cheated. A text based interface that couldn't be more simple and what seemed like a simple hoard and build game. I kept playing to see what the reviews were about and while I don't think I felt connected like others did, it was still worthwhile to play to the end.
It expands past simply hoarding and building which really added a whole other level to the game and I finally got what the reviews were saying. I really like how you're not babied through the game too and there's a lot to figure out and explore by yourself, which is more difficult to come by in games these days. Thanks very much for the experience.
