Ratings and Reviews

Basic, fun programme but not particularly easy to use

I found this application was quite difficult to come to terms with as it is not very intuitive to use after using more advanced programmes such as Photoshop and Pixelmator. It has most of the tools required for image manipulation but the menus and sub-menus are numerous and not always easy to find.

Saving images is limited to Artstudio Pro or Artstudio Pro Zipped formats which is a huge problem. You need to export images to save in any other format.

Good fun to play around with but, for the money, there are better, more professional programmes on the App Store.

Not an expert but a long term computer user! Great fun but so versatile too!

Changing to iMac from Windows was traumatic, not from the difference in format or access to programs etc. but because we lost our beloved art and word processing programs. We have invested in a few packages that have left us both frustrated. We have differing needs. I do photography and he does fine art! Programs that we have tried have been OK for messing with photos, but creating images was just not inuitive or enjoyable. Photoshop was like a third arm to us, so easy, deep, infinitely wide ranging and expensive. Found this program on featured items in the IOS App Store. Decided to give it a go. Now, you have to judge this review on a few excited minutes of trying to find and use the relatively simple nterface that offers a massive range of tools and options.
Well, I can tell you that I have just loved it. So intuitive!
The tools on the left hand side mostly have text and graphics flyouts, ie. hold the little arrow head to see further options. Amazing range of effects.
Then the options flyout list, under colour and brushes, give you spectrum or basic colour blocks and styles of brush ranging through impossible to believe options, respectively.
So, immediately, you can access styles, tools and colours in seconds just using a few clicks. Remember to look at the bottom of the screen for advice on using the Mac option key (ctrl on Windows I guess.) Images, photographic or graphic can be inverted, changed to black and white and a host of other options that you woud expect from an image processing program. Not delved into all but this is all based on a very quick run around!
Layers are shown clearly, as in the graphics above, with the choice of merging etc. of course. But, the most exciting thing is that the back button undoes the previous changes rapidly, like the old ‘History’ options of other programs. You have the usual task bar but so nice just to access things from within the image window.
Look, I am not trying to sell this as something for a professional, though my husband is an artist, using computer graphics some of the time, and he loves it too, (keeps yelling out as I use this,) but in the 20 minutes since buying this give or take, we thoroughly recommend this for someone who is willing to experiment, someone who is used to graphics packages, and someone wanting to alter images for professional purposes. However, cannot think why it would not be great for a professional too! Has mask options and flyout help options or instructions to quickly continue with a tool. What a joy. We bought Affinity, and the interface just outfaced me with tiny graphical tools. Too much on view at one time. This is much easier on the eye and the brain! (Hoping that the cataracts will be done this year!!) Not expensive for what you get. Fun! Use the wet brush on an image and get to feel it! Preview with APPLE is a brilliant free image editor, but this program extends the options into infinity! Not sure if it has things like ‘perspective’ options. No help listing as yet.

Good value and has lifted our spirits!

Very impressive brush engine

I have photoshop, krita and many others, and I must say this app has a fantasic brush engine. Its very responsive and smooth. Also works well on a Retina display.

I bought this out of pure curiosity because quite frankly I didn't need it- but I always like to test new painting software out and, I was drawn in by that awesome logo! I’d definitely recommend to any digital painters that want something cheap that’ll do a great job. I cant believe the file size is only 44mb!

All in all I’m impressed. The brush options are a little overwhelming - as I was looking for turning pressure for opacity on. - please add a shortcut icon in the brush toolbar for this feature!

(would be handy to have a few youtube tutorial videos especially for brush settings)

Also there is a little brush underneath the crosshair- please have an option to remove this in the settings as its quite distracting! :)

Edit: Note to new users - Some brushes have limiting sizes or set sizes as default- you can remove this in the brushes settings and still edit the size (change ‘Min scale' to zero under dynamics tab and also Max size under ’stamp’ tab), It’s kind of unusual and I personally don’t like it but I can understand its use and perhaps I’m just not used to it. Apart from that, the more I use this app the more im liking it!
