The aurora borealis (or northern lights) is a spectacular natural phenomenon which can occasionally be seen in the night sky over Britain. Once seen, it is never forgotten. AuroraWatch UK allows you to monitor geomagnetic activity in real time, and will let you know when aurora may be visible from the UK.

AuroraWatch UK is a free service run by Lancaster University, indicating the likelihood of an auroral sighting from within the UK.

This AuroraWatch UK iPhone app, developed in association with AuroraWatch UK, allows you to have this data at your fingertips on your iPhone, whilst providing free real-time alerts to notify you whenever aurora is likely to be seen from the UK.

Alerts can be configured within the app to different levels, so you will know when to look out for aurora wherever you are.

AuroraWatch UK also includes Apple Watch App.

Great app!!

Used this little app for a couple of years now and is great for predicting when we might be lucky enough to see the lights. The notifications are fab, rely on them so much for planning my evening when there's clear skies over the UK. I've been let down more often than not (the aurora can quickly die down) but the times I have managed to photograph the lights, it wouldn't have been possible without the information on this app.

What's not to love

Fabulous app that does exactly what it claims and more. Well thought out notification criteria, and useful info. Improvements could be a time slider back + forecast on the already very cool 30min map view, and perhaps some way of negating the hours delay? For us in N Yorks, that could be the difference between seeing and missing the aurora. Thanks for making this app available though, especially at no cost. 5 stars, no hesitation.

Developer Response

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review.
On the point of an hours delay, there is no delay, the times are in UTC (which is the same as GMT). As we are in British Summer Time right now, the times will appear to be one hour different, but are actually real time.

Great App

I've always wanted to see the Northern Lights and even went to Iceland but was hindered by cloud cover. This App gives you traffic light alerts allowing you a chance of catching them weather and cloud cover permitting. Much appreciation to the person who thought of this. Thoroughly recommend.
