What's New

Version 1.5.3

# Bear 1.5.3: The Sidebar Edition
Welcome to Bear 1.5.3 for iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch! Visit our Notes & Prose blog for more information, tips, occasional GIFs, and news:
blog.bear-writer.com
** Set Your Own TagCons ** One of our largest requests ever! You can now set your own TagCons for all tags! Don’t like one of our defaults? Change it! Pick from our library of 169 TagCons (80 of them brand new in 1.5!). Yes, we’ll add more soon. :)

Also: When you select a tag on iPhone and iPad, Bear now displays its TagCon (if assigned) in the Notes List header to remind you of the current tag you’re viewing.

** Hide Notes You Don’t Need ** This was another big request. Deleting old notes is sometimes too... delete-ish. But it also feels... analog-y to print them out. Now you can archive them! Archived notes disappear from the Notes List, but are still searchable in the Sidebar’s new Archive section.

** Find Notes You DO Need ** Find notes faster with new Sidebar sections like Untagged, ToDo, Today, and Archive.

** Export All Notes in a Tag ** You can now export all notes from a specific tag. If you have sub-tags, they’ll become subfolders.

** Publish That Novel ** Alongside exporting all notes in a tag, free and Bear Pro users can now export notes into EPUB format—perfect for publishing your next great novel. Just remember us little people when you embark on that international book tour.

** Pull to Do Stuff ** On iPhone and iPad, you can now pull down to search notes and close preferences. We like this gesture, so we’re tinkering with more ways to use it.

** A New Theme for Bear Pro Users: Ayu ** We have a beautiful new theme for Bear Pro users, Ayu, based on a theme created by Ike Ku.

Note that these, and many other themes, are part of Bear Pro. Learn more about Bear Pro at: bear-writer.com/faq

** Pretty Colors for More Code Languages ** We added new syntax coloring support for AppleScript, YAML, Dart, Diff, Fountain, and Clojure.

A beautiful and flexible writing app which makes linking notes as simple as adding a hashtag.

Super Brilliant and Exciting. Versatile and Brave.

So, before I wrote this I thought I’d have a look at the one star reviews because I wanted to see what it is that I am not seeing, where is the broken parts? It might be that BEAR have taken on board what people have said, because there is now a one off payment for the pro version so that’s some of these negatives already striked out. I find their Twitter team to be charming, responsive and super fun so the complaints about tech support are confusing to me. Other than that, people are marking this down for not being Apple Notes/Evernote/Day One [delete as applicable]. It’s not any of them. It doesn’t say it is. When you read the blurb, nowhere does it say “we are taking on the establishment head on”. So if you are expecting that then you will be disappointed.

If you are looking for a simple, easy to use, forever evolving, versatile, exciting note app then you will love this. You can have multi layer tags - for example Todo and then under that ‘to buy’, ‘to blog’, ‘to pack’ whatever. It syncs across devices instantly. If you create something with a tick list it will show you how far through your ticks you’ve got. Having used all the established names in the past I’ve got to say that this takes the best of all of them and makes it better. Multiple notebooks? Check. Copy off safari? Yup. Headings, fonts, lists? Oh yes. I love it, and I am super proud to be along for the journey of BEAR.

I subscribed but didn't go past the free trial

For two main reasons I have withdrawn my Pro subscription after prematurely going for it. I love the look and complexity of Bear, apart from the limited number of fonts which is only a slight niggle. But it was a monumental task to move my many notes from Apple Notes. Notes is now a very useable app and I have been using it extensively for a couple of years. I have many hundreds of notes and the organisation is crucial.

There is a good third party utility on the Mac App Store that works importing notes - under the headings originally used. Very helpful. But Bear does not support note titles and categories in the same way, it uses tags, which is a better idea but to convert from Notes you have to modify each individual note's category with a tag. I did about a third which took hours. But lost heart when I realised at this rate it was a full days work. Really a shame.

Apple Notes is a now serious competitor for Bear, synchs well across devices and is likely to improve further so why doesn't Bear meet that challenge, and use its obvious resources to make a good flexible conversion app? I'd consider re subscribing. Conversion must be a big factor for many writers like me. But until then I'll use the free version to make notes on my watch and move those to Apple Notes - which is where I started before I noticed how interesting Bear looked. Shame it's not practical for me.
