Problems with version 2.0

The content of this app is very good and I have been happily using version 1 for a good while. The upgrade to 2.0 brings some useful features (e.g. a comparison facility) but also introduces a major problem. While the photos on this version will still resize to fill available screen space (if you minimise the text or change to landscape orientation) the other illustrations don't - they just show at the same small size surrounded by loads of wasted white space. The accompanying i.d. tips text now verges on too small to read on a full-size iPad. In version 1 the illustrations resized properly to use available screen space. This is a backward step for version 2.0 and, given that the illustrations are such a key component of the guide, it really needs fixing to restore the usability of the excellent underpinning content.

Anlaf the Dane

A superb guide to UK butterflies. The guide comes with clear drawings of imago, larva, pupa and ovum as well as photographs of all stages. Full information on each species is given along with an at a glance flight chart and distribution map.
It can be tricky to compare two species as easily as in a book, but if you use press your iPhone power and home button simultaniuosly and copy the guides pages you can take a snap of the relevant species and easily compare them on the photos app. Now I will always have that fieldguide handy when I need to check a butterfly I have just spotted!
A great guide and well worth the money.

Excellent app providing high quality reference.

Hard to fault this app with beautiful and accurate illustrations by Ian Lewington, really good photos and up to date maps. The text is a bit sparse, but provides all the standard information including all-important food plants. And the guide covers not just the adult butterflies (imagos) but also the earlier stages in each life cycle including larvae and eggs. The interface is easy to use and responsive. Perhaps a bit expensive at £10 but there is nothing else to touch it.
