Description

CableCalc BS7671 is a cable evaluation program fully compliant with BS7671:2018 Requirements for Electrical Installations IEE Wiring Regulations 18th Edition based on IEC/CENELEC Standards.

Following the success of previous releases of CableCalc BS7671 over the past 20 years, CableCalc BS7671 has been re-designed for the iPad to provide a intuitive user interface with all the comprehensive features of the Windows software.

CableCalc BS7671 will calculate and check for voltage drop, disconnection time, fault current, earth fault data, overload and short circuit data and will produce a detailed print-out for each calculation in PDF format which can be printed to an AirPort compatible printer or emailed.

CableCalc BS7671 will perform both single and three-phase calculations for radial, ring and sub main circuits.

CableCalc includes a full database of copper cables and generic protective devices and allows you to complete all information relevant to the calculation including any applicable correction factors for temperature, grouping etc. Energy let through values can be entered and calculations can be saved to load back in later.

Cable types include:

70°C PVC Armoured & Non Armoured multicore & singles, Twin & earth, 6491x & 6181y Singles

Don't waste your money

Yes the interface is nowhere near as nice as the photo shots
It does what is says to a degree but not a cheap software
And as with all these programs I've found errors,

How much?!! But....

I've tried several cable calculation iOS apps that have been under the £10 mark and have found them all wanting in one way or another. Whilst I always check the cable sizes I use the old fashioned way with the big green book and the little osg book, I wanted a method I could use to quickly check my results and also to log the results so I had a form of proof that I had calculated the cable size required.

The cheaper apps where either limited in their choice of cables which meant they weren't much use all the time, had no means of easily printing or creating a PDF copy of the results, or where just plain rubbish and crashed all the time.

I then went looking for a desktop application of reasonable price, of which there are a very small handful, all PC based and again, all wanting in one area or another. For a start they all meant lugging a laptop around if you wanted the facility on site or when quoting, had a very old fashioned GUI, and some where just a convoluted spreadsheet which seemed to be cheating.

I then stumbled upon Castlines desktop software which of all the mid to high end software suites certainly seemed the most promising, if not some of the more expensive options. I'm currently considering their Level 2 desktop software (which will have to run on a Virtual PC on the iMac) but I still needed a portable option.

Which is where this app comes in. I spoke to one of their technical people and apparently this app does everything their Level 1 desktop software does apart from lacking a few of the more obscure cable types, and not producing the fuse blow time charts. Whilst this wasn't a deal breaker, I'm sure this is something they could bring to the app in a future update, after all, dropping £150 notes on an app is something of a gamble and one which I'm hoping will pay off after an update or two.

Yes it's by far and away the most successful cable calc app I've used by a long way, miles even, but they seriously need an update to help justify the cost.
