Why try it?
Calm Harm provides tasks that help you resist or manage the urge to self harm. You can add your own tasks too and it’s completely private and password protected.

What does it do?
The four categories of tasks target the main reasons for why people self harm. Distract helps to combat the urge by learning self control; Comfort helps to care rather than harm; Express gets those feelings out in a different way and Release provides safe alternatives to self injury.

Will it work?
Calm Harm is an award-winning app developed for stem4 by Dr Krause, Consultant Clinical Psychologist using ideas from an evidence based therapy called DBT. The focus is to help learn to identify and manage your ‘emotional mind’ with positive impact. The app enables you to track your progress. Please note that the app is an aid in treatment but does not replace it.

Hide Activities You Don’t Like – If there are any activities you don’t want to see in your list, you can hide them.

Make Notes – During certain activities, we’ve added in a notes section, so you can write down answers, make lists or write down your thoughts and feelings.

Create a Journal – After completing an activity, you can write a short note about how you were feeling. This is then kept as a record in the My Log section of the app for you to revisit.

Add Your Own Help Sections – If you want to create your own Help page, you can. Write some text, add some contacts or add in a link to your favourite websites.

Updated Activities – We have added some new activities.

Good idea but not good completion

I believe this app was developed with the best at mind but it wasn’t thought out correctly. The activities cannot be completed through the app. It requires you to go and get things such as paper and a pen to draw or write things down, it’s more about giving you things to do rather than actually helping you do them? It says to draw or call people or go for a walk, someone who is suicidal at that point does not want to go for a walk? They want to hurt themselves and if they are using this app they need real help right now, they dont have time to go into their craft box or pencil case or search round for a pen. If the app seems to think doodling will help then you should be able to doodle within the app, wordsearchs, colouring and other like for like activities should be available in the app itself and not from outside sources. It seemed like a good idea in the beginning but now I’ve started trying to use it I’m just frustrated

Hi, thanks for your review. Sorry the app is frustrating you, it won't help everybody. In the next release users will be able to type answers to relevant activities in a 'notepad'. We would love to add interactive activities, however as a charity we have to fundraise to include these types of features in the app and we want the app to remain free for young people. I will pass on your feedback to our development team for future releases though, thank you.



I don't normally write reviews but I find this app amazing to help me ride the wave and manage my urges.

It doesn't always stop my urges (which is my own issue, however it has REALLY HELPED!) it has so many suggestions and different ways to help ride the wave and you don't even have to use it for self harm it can help ride the wave for a lot of issues related to mental health problems.

It also helps you keep a log about your urges and asks you rate how the activities helped your urges! Highly recommend!

DOWLOAD IT. Just do it. This app is honestly one of the only apps that actually distracts me in a way that doesn't feel fake, it is such a brilliant mix of ideas you automatically snap out of the mindset and into the app. Download it just to see if it works for you which it most likely will! And if it doesn't then try again, if you feel like you can't try then using your phone really helps as it's a pretty basic easy thing for me :) love to all!!
