Castlerama takes you on a photorealistic walk through a beautiful, detailed and accurately lit 3D setting. Merging real and imaginary elements, it draws inspiration from the charming town of Assisi, in Italy. You are left to find your own way around by touch and sight alone. Exploring a whole world becomes a matter of lifting your fingers.

Our goal? To fool your eyes and brain considering it all real. When you go back with your memory to the day you first opened this Mentalbox, you will think it was you on the cobblestone, you in the alleys, you in the catacombs...

While developing Castlerama, we had to face the fact that newer devices such as iPhone4s and iPad2s are very different from their predecessors, iPhone3GSs and iPads, in that the former have twice as much memory. In order to have the app run on all devices, we had to compromise quite a bit, pushing the old devices to their limits (risking crash if other applications are left running) while keeping the new devices well behind their capabilities.

Powered by Unreal Engine.

Graphics great! But crashes constantly

Looks good! Great music and sound! But crashes every few seconds :( [iPhone 4s]

Good potential!

Crashed first time, had to reset iPod, even though it's a 4th generation.

Unfortunately the graphics don't justify the huge file size and performance you get from this app. The filesize is twice that of Epic Citadel and yet you cannot compare them graphically. It's quite a lot smaller than Epic Citadel and the textures at the moment are bland and the world feels quite empty and unfinished. The lighting is also a bit sporadic.
Performance can drop quite a bit when looking at areas with a high polygon counts.

However, I did like the setting and the eerie atmosphere especially in the catacombs. It seems like this place can actually exist somewhere in real life. Even though sometimes it was a bit too dark.

I think there is a lot of potential in this and I'm glad that developers are starting to make use of the Unreal Engine. Looking forward to more in the future!

Ok, you will almost certainly have to restart your device running this app... Or it will crash. This is an iOS issue that affects almost ever large app.

It's worth it though to see this tech demo of unreal engine not unlike Epic Citadel but with full freedom of movement. The graphics are on the dark side but turn the lights off and out some headphones on and you might even forget it's all just a computer.

Great things to come, I hope.
