Great game with some ai bugs
I'd say this is the game I've played by far the most on my ipad. I'm quite pleased to say that it's not so much addictive as just enjoyable to play- quite a challenge. I'd recommend looking it up online, as there are some game mechanics, especially in battles between military units, which aren't obvious. However, my one criticism of it is that the AI is a little limited. It's pretty good for an ipad game, but there are a couple of bugs which allow you to win more easily. For example, you can build lots of spies and just bombard a capital city to steal all the great people - this isn't a tactic they will learn to defend against. Also, if you leave a barbarian village in place on a one tile wide strip of land, AI characters won't destroy it to get to you, so it becomes an impenetrable barrier (Assuming, that is, that they can't get around it another way). Finally, it's a shame that it seems like at the harder difficulty levels you can't pay the ai characters to wage war on each other - they just say they haven't met each other. Overall though, a great game.
A worthy effort
I've been a fan of Civilization since the early 90's and continued to play Civ 2 on my PC even after later versions came out: I always felt that Civ 3 and 4 had rather lost their way by focusing on the graphics and GUI rather than developing the game's real strength which was the strategy and the interrelationship between the technologies and the various constraints on the types of production possible at any given time. Civ 5 has, I'm glad to say, returned somewhat to these roots but only at the cost of becoming so large it takes forever to play. Civilization Revolutions goes back more to the basics and is therefore fun to play. My only criticism is that it still puts too much into the graphics at the expense if the strategy, which is quite a lot less sophisticated than in Civ 2. What I would really like is an iPad version of Civ 2 which still takes a lot of beating for sheer fun. But still, Revolutions is still better than anything else I've seen of he strategy game type.
Good, could be great
Like other reviewers I was "brought up" on Civ 2 and the iPad version feels similar. It is fun and engenders that "just have one more turn" addictive quality that is so important. The game is light, but not light enough that you don't end up caring about what happens to the hard won fledgling city of the edge of your empire. It hurts more than it really should when you realise that your twice replayed strategy will still not save it. The game could be better. I would like a little more sophistication from the AI. There seems to be very limited interaction between the other NPCs. Treaties which increase the risk of declaring war on one opponent would balance the game better at King level. Once you have got your head round the various elements it is relatively easy to get to a position where you can churn out tanks and pick off countries left one at a time. All in all though, this is a game I keep coming back to, and gets my most played on iPad award.
