Conker Tree Science: Leaf Watch. Help the Universities of Bristol and Hull track the spread of the horse-chestnut leaf miner moth with this simple, intuitive app.
What is happening to Britain’s horse-chestnut trees? Since 2002 Britain’s conker trees have been under attack from a non-native moth – and you can help scientists at the Universities of Bristol and Hull monitor what’s happening. The Conker Tree Science: Leaf Watch app shows you how to identify affected trees and enables you to submit your geo-located leaf photos. This data will show our scientists where the moth is present within the UK today. Your reports will contribute to the Conker Tree Science research project. Save the conker..
Let's hope this app gives the boffins enough info to save our horse chestnuts. I noticed this discolouration on the leaves in spring and wondered what it was. I'm glad they have found a solution to the alien moth.
To the person that gave one star, either you did not understand what the app is or you're a miserable so and so!
Great app. I love the idea of 'citizen science'.
One reviewer suggested that you can't submit more than one photo a month. That's not the case at all. The instructions say "You are welcome to submit as many records as you like throughout summer, but please only create 1 record per tree per month."
What a fantastic app, just a shame you can't submit more than one a month. I'm a tree surgeon & see alot of Horse Chestnut trees in the course of a week, I'd gladly report every one I see. Ah well, looking forward to seeing some results. Get the app & join in, why not !! It's FREE !!
