—Engadget, June 2012

"Active.com’s Couch to 5K is one of my favorite… apps. With its customizable features, interactivity, and well-rounded interface, I may actually stay off the couch this time."
—148Apps, October 2011

"I knew as soon as I decided to start the Couch to 5K program that I would need something to keep me accountable—not just to showing up for my training, but to actually doing it properly. Of course there’s an app for that."
—CalorieLab, April 2012

"If you have been struggling to get your buns off the couch and somewhat in shape before the summer hits, training for a 5K is not a bad way to start. If you are looking for a program to help get you there, then the “Couch to 5K” running plan by CoolRunning is probably your best bet if you haven’t done an ounce of athletic activity for a number of years."
—Droid Life, April 2012

Note:
Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

The Couch to 5K coach you select talks to you during your workouts. To save your battery, Couch to 5K sends audio notifications when your screen is locked or another app is in use.

To be sure you hear the coach during your workout, please do the following:
• Turn on Notifications permissions
• Turn on the hardware ring/silent switch (no red showing)
• Turn your ringer volume up
• Turn off Do Not Disturb (swipe up for Control Panel and the moon button should not be white)
• Within the app, in Settings > Workout Options, be sure the Trainer Volume is up

Without granting notification permissions, during a workout you can click the lock icon at the top left to keep the app active and still hear the coach.

For support please contact us at: MobileSupport@activenetwork.com We would love to hear from you.

Once you purchase the app, it is yours to keep. It does not expire after 9 weeks.

Couch to 5K

Excellent app. At the end of each session you feel exhausted. This happens every time because it pushes you to your limits. However, your limits steadily increase and you suddenly realise you have run a mile whereas when you started you struggled to run a hundred yards. Then comes the day you complete 2 miles without a break and you realise you are a runner. After that you just keep going until you hit the 5K mark. As I told my daughter, You are a mother. If you can give birth then you can do this.

Doesn’t work well with audiobooks

I like listening to audiobooks (or occasionally podcasts) instead of music when I work out. Recently I decided to take up running but I’ve had a lot of trouble finding a running app that works well with audiobooks. I would prefer a running app that will PAUSE my audiobook when giving me instructions, and then resume the audiobook once the instructions are finished.

Instead they all speak OVER the audiobook - ie the volume of the audiobook is turned very low and the instructions (“start jogging” “do a brisk walk”) will play over the audiobook. It means I can’t hear the audiobook well while the app is giving me instructions so each time, I have to rewind the audiobook so I didn’t miss what was said. It’s annoying and tedious.

I’ve been trying a lot of different running apps to find one that might be compatible with audible but unfortunately this app is the absolute worst one I’ve tried. With other running apps, each time it gives instructions it lowers the volume of the audiobook, but the volume goes back to normal straight away. Not with this one though! At least half the time, the volume stays low even after the coaching instructions are over.

I expected a lot better given that I actually paid for this one. I didn’t have this problem with any of the other apps I tried, and they were all free. Very disappointed.

Good app needs better watch support

In general a pretty good app -- not too annoyingly peppy and cheerful, and has good gps tracking and data logging.

Flaws are mainly with watch connectivity. First, you can't just glance at your watch to see how far into a run or walk segment you are because the watch takes several seconds to catch up with the app on your phone (how hard is it to use the watch's clock to count seconds?). Second, there's no complication for this app, so if your watch has reverted to the watch face you have to go to the watch app finder and hunt for this app among gzillions.

Finally, really big wish list item for those of us who run in the woods or off road -- a "find your way back" feature with a link to maps on the watch.
