It’s okay, could be so much better
I’ve had a long relationship with the cricket captain franchise since I was a child playing the 1999 edition. This game, however, hasn’t progressed as it should have. While other management games have prgressed drastically (Football Manager series), this game has remained the same. The skin and layout is EXACTLY the same as cricket captain 2009, and it hasn’t vastly changed since cricket captain 2005. The match engine is still good, although the news and other feeds are poor. There’s no real way to judge the players other than on form, and it feels more like a database than being a real cricket captain.
Enough with the comments on the series though, on a whole this download is quite good. It plays very well although does have some MAJOR bugs that need fixing. The on my edition have crashed, never to return, although this only makes players shadows very dark and means that every player has black marks all over their shirts. It’s still playable. The biggest flaw with this game is that it will occasionally crash and corrupt the save file. This usually will only happen when you’re 5 seasons in and have built your team from scratch, only to see it snatched away from you by the message: Unrecognised file format.
Other than these massive glitches the game remains a solid purchase for any cricket fan who also loves management games. But come on Childish Things, please sort it out.
Better than anything else in the genre
This is a good little game. Not great, but it can certainly steal an hour or two without you realising.
From a technical standpoint, it's not a masterpiece. The animation's a bit scatty, and the audio commentary (courtesy of our beloved Aggers) sometimes cuts-out and overlaps on itself. Every now and then, the fielding is implausibly 'brilliant' - like a bullet-throw from deep square leg directly hitting the one visible stump - but otherwise, you rarely feel 'cheated' by anything. It's a solid representation of the game of cricket.
Above all else - being entirely pragmatic - this is the best cricket management game I've ever played and, until a better one comes out, cricket fans have nowhere else to turn! The price (£14 when I bought it) is perfectly reasonable for what this offers, so I say: if you love cricket, get it.
A few bugs, but the classic lives on!
I've always had a copy of this game through the years and was delighted to see that it had come to Mac at the same time I made the switch, it's just as good as always.
Very accurate representation of the modern game, plenty of modes and an exceptional amount of gameplay, also the difficulty has certainly been increased from previous years which is good.
Annoying bugs are the way kits don't render correctly they have horrible black patches all over them and when using the boundaries/chances/wickets HL mode it'll cut to the clip just a little sooner if it's wicket which really gives the game away unfortunately.
