The Literacy Shed presents DADWAVERS, an app to help and inspire young writers and teachers to develop their narrative writing. There are seven genres broken down into three parts, word bank, model sentences, model text. Each of these can be used independently to aid budding story tellers.
The mnemonic DADWAVERS stands for Description, Action, Dialogue, Where, Adverb, Verb, Estimation of time, Rhetorical Questions and Simile & metaphor. The app provides examples of each sentence type that children can adapt and use in their writing.
The model texts in the app use one of each of the sentence types to create a coherent paragraph which can be used by teachers as a good example.
Another gem from the Literacy Shed
As a long time user of the superb Literacy Shed resources, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the app. I wasn't disappointed!
It's packed packed full off of vocabulary and example sentence the pupils can adapt to use in their own writing.
It is well set out and easy to use, providing an excellent tool for students and teachers alike.
I have found it particularly useful for helping my pupils develop a sense of authors 'style'.
The genres listed in the app link closely to the wealth of video clips and other resources available on the Literacy Shed site. Between the two we are able to create some fantastic writing, from children who are inspired.
I've attended a Literacy Shed talk and found myself thinking of new ways to engage children in storytelling. This app takes that a few steps further by giving a practical set of tools which will transform the process. Fantastic stuff!
Absolute waste of an app. Very basic for the price, only has a few example sentences & these aren't even downloaded with the app so you need to use data or wifi connection every time you click a link or open a new section. No ideas for teaching etc. Wish I hadn't bothered with it.
