Editors’ Choice

With its friendly approach and awesome updates, Duolingo’s long been one of our favorite apps for learning another language. Its secret: making the process genuinely fun. Engaging mini-games test your reading, writing, and speaking skills, and joining a club (where you can encourage and compete with others) adds a great social element. Bonus: all those languages and games are available for free!

This app is brilliant! I didn’t expect to make progress very quickly as I struggled to pick up languages in secondary school. The alternating between translating from English-german, german-english, listening and typing what you hear, choosing from multiple choice options etc. Seems to be a very effective way to really help the information to sink in. Differences between masculine and feminine (der/die/das/den) are difficult and sometimes involve a bit of memorisation but the structure of learning duolingo uses has resulted in me beginning to understand how and why words are used as well as memorising. As long as you frequently revise sections/practice, duolingo is a shockingly easy way to learn a new language!
Note: flaws wise - the gems are a little irritating to collect. I want to learn german in as much depth as I can so I don’t like that the “extras” (flirting/idioms and proverbs) require a massive amount of diamonds to collect. Extra health (lost when making mistakes) is far too expensive to purchase. Personally I’m happy to practice 5 times if need be but others probably don’t like that. Also the practice section seems to usually test on animals/easier parts, id like to be challenged on everything?
Amazing app, highly recommend giving it a go! I’d pay for it if need be.

Updates are ruining this app

I love language learning, I am starting a degree in German next year and probably wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't for Duolingo. But with all the new updates I can barely stand the app. The new health system is ridiculous! I have completed the German tree and would now like to level up topics but after 5 mistakes I have to either buy a health refill, wait a day for them to refill or practise to refill them. While I would like to practise my German, the current practise forces you to practise topics from the very beginning of the tree. I don't need to be reminded how to say bread and water!! Duolingo needs to create some sort of algorithm to choose a suitable level to begin practising from because I can't learn anything from the end of the tree without having to practise the most basic things to refill my health. It's just ridiculous, duolingo is putting making money before a good learning experience. I can accept adverts and some in app purchases but the health system needs to be fixed. The desktop version is still quite good, but they need to sort the app out because they are losing some of their oldest users with their pointless updates. I enjoy using memrise much more nowadays as I can practise at the level I'm at without my session being interrupted by me being forced to practise the most basic greetings and verb conjugation. Sort yourself out duolingo!
