Has failed me twice now
Twice this app has let me down.
The first time, I had rushed to get a train. I had loaded and logged into the app previously but had not downloaded the ticket. I got on the train and the app wouldn’t log in (even though it had been logged in), so it took 10 minutes to download and activate the ticket. During this time, the ticket inspector gave me a delightful lecture about how I should have the ticket ready - making me feel stupid in front of a packed carriage.
The second time, I did not make the same mistake. I loaded the ticket and got on the train for the first leg - no problem. I had to change at Birmingham New St, so had to come out of the barriers and go back in. The ticket wouldn’t work on the barriers, so the guard let me out. Coming back into the barriers 30 seconds later, the app had logged out (I had done nothing to the phone in between). It then took 6 minutes to log in, re-download and then activate the same ticket I had already partially used, to get let into the barriers (by the guard, it still wouldn’t work); by this time the train had departed, so I had to wait another 30 minutes.
Do not use this app unless you have a love of standing around waiting and a need to be publicly humiliated.
Certainly don’t think it will save you time!
First time using the app. Clunky user interface. Slow. And tricky to use - especially if you are travelling with kids and therefore have multiple tickets. Keeps randomly logging you out - so I ended up with my 6 year old one side of the barrier, whilst my other kids were stuck on the opposite side - so I desperately tried to log back in multiple times to get everyone through but the app took far too long to swipe through multiple tickets for us all to go through quickly enough. The 6 year old started crying and everyone started to get pretty stressed. Fortunately, a lovely guard let us through. Bad start to the journey. Much, much, much - did I say much enough? - easier to stick with paper tickets - I won’t be using the app or E tickets in the future.
Reinventing the wheel
We booked two tickets for travel to Nottingham on the weekend and the email suggests you use the EM app.
Once downloaded there is absolutely no guidance on how to access your tickets if you didn’t buy them.
Why even both with an app why not just provide Wallet style tickets like every other cinema, airline or event organiser.
But if you are going to make one it had better be bullet proof when you are dealing with peoples travel. My partner logged into the app but there is no clear indication that the tickets won’t ‘activate’ until the day of travel. Presently it’s suggesting only she is travelling.
It gets one star for a least looking vaguely like a reputable app but -4 in every other respect.
The best travel app experience I’ve seen is the airlines where you put your reference and name in the app and they give you a digital boarding card you can present at the gate.
Why not do the same? Otherwise just stick to paper tickets so much easier.
Up to six family members will be able to use this app with Family Sharing enabled.
