Terrible scrolling experience
Never have I known an app so good with one minor UI issue that effectively prohibits use of the app. That issue is the inability to scroll through content. Feedly has 3 navigation options: Stack, Swipe, Scroll. But Scroll is in fact another version of Stack, where content is grouped into screen-sized stacks. Only one stack can be seen at a time. You then ‘scroll’ through stacks, but the stacks snap into position.
Every year or so I try out a new reader (since google reader disappeared). I try out Feedly and am reminded each time why I could never use it.
It requires such a simple fix: add a natural scroll feature, with no Stack snapping. The eyes can then remain locked in position while the content scrolls. Currently your eyes need to read top to bottom, then repeat for each new Stack. It sounds minor, and it is an extremely simple fix, but it’s frustrating enough for me to not want to use the app. Please fix this!
Change for the worse
I’m not sure what this update has accomplished other than to annoy your users by the look of things. I hate the new continuous scrolling feature - please give us back the old page option. I also prefer the look of the older app - at least that broke up the content with some larger images - now you just have the option of a list or a grid of exactly the same sized tiles… boring.
All I really want from the app is a quick way of scanning my news feed and the ability to quickly add anything interesting to Pocket where I can later read/file/delete it - and now that feature has been removed from the free version.
I understand that you have to make money somehow, but I’d prefer to see ads than subscribe to yet another app.
Hip but less functional
News reading apps are one of the best examples of “must be functional over being slick and hip” and the new Feedly redesign breaks that. I know it is a tough task, I appreciate you left the classic design app out there (unmaintained?), but it does not mean the new design cannot be criticised and hopefully the answer is not a hand waving “opinionated design” one... this is a regression.
So much wasted empty space, none of the mix of display density and news type (text, card, magazine) feels right and uses the screen spaces well. It is a lot harder to quickly flip through the news and find the ones that deserve closer attention. Designer and coders are probably happy and in isolation they probably did a good job: it looks and feels smooth... still not what a news app should aim to be.
