Great game, disappointing update

The game is still great, it was the reason for me to get excited again about gamebooks, and I'm always waiting for the next one to come out.

BUT, the current update basically just removes the Game Centre integration (they did warn us about this half a year ago or so) and streamlines the look and feel of the UI to the other books.

Sadly it also wipes all progress that you had in the book. Say good bye to your achievements and art gallery unlocks. It might have been just me, but I also needed to reinstall the game, because it kept crashing every time I opened anything with text on it (like the actual book or the credits). I'm not quite sure about this, but the pictures and sound effects in the game also sound like that they are lower quality/resolution than the ones in the other gamebooks.

All in all, do I recommend buying this? Naturally. Do I recommend updating if you already own it? Definitely not.

Fast paced but frustrating

A game book app where you are trapped in a castle of zombies and must kill them all.

It is great to have so many Fighting Fantasy titles being released as apps now, and the Tin Man adaptations make the experience more portable and less fiddly while still allowing the book to shine through. Blood of Zombies was the most recent Fighting Fantasy release and plays the most like a computer game, with quite a frenetic pacing to the story and the combat, so having it as a game app is probably the best way to play it.

Unfortunately, this is one of the weaker Fighting Fantasy titles, mostly because the difficulty is ridiculously high due to the combat mechanism. Bad luck, such as rolling consecutive 1s in a fight against a high number of enemies quickly ends any hope you have. While most Fighting Fantasy books require you to be improbably lucky only on your starting rolls, this requires you to continually defy probability and almost never roll below a 5. I recommend playing on Free Read and using some extra rule like the free heal every time you use a medi kit in order to avoid throwing your device away in frustration.

If you enjoy the game book apps which have the old style paragraph numbers and dice animations, then this is a good one to play through. However, there are several in the series which are superior, so try them first.

I’d rate the app conversion as 4 star but the book itself only 2 star. The latest update gives the app a small makeover to be in line with the more recent releases. It does seem to delete all achievements and art collections already collected unfortunately. Also, I noticed a couple of small bugs introduced, so hopefully another update will follow which fixes them.
