Initially released in Japan in 1987, the original FINAL FANTASY amazed audiences with its rich story and stunning graphics.
Players guide the Warriors of Light as they set out on a quest to restore the crystals to their former luster. Its side-view battles, choice and promotion of character classes, and sprawling world explored with fantastic vehicles quickly became standards of the series. This game set the stage for all FINAL FANTASY games to come.
This release also contains the bonus dungeons added to later editions of the game--the Soul of Chaos and the Labyrinth of Time.

Issues preventing five stars
The game itself is a joy, but there are two problems. Firstly, the game often experiences a glitch whereby characters' stats cannot be viewed. You simply get a blank page where the numbers should be. Secondly, upon beating the final boss and letting the credits role, you are simply returned back to the home screen when tapping without the opportunity to save again for a clear game save file. This makes the bestiary entry for the final boss impossible to attain. If these issues were resolved I would be more than happy to give the game four or five stars.
Edit: Another issue detected; text sometimes continues past the text box and off the screen. I have only spotted this issue in the labyrinth of time bonus dungeon.
I can partially manage some of the initial issues via total shutdown of my device (Ipad), but this only seems to remedy the situation temporarily. An update would be appreciated to fix these issues.
Could have been great
To be clear, the game itself is a joy; utterly engaging and a prime example of what an RPG should basically be. I only take issue with this particular version. The control scheme is a massive flaw. Where ever you put your thumb, that's where the d-pad is. I'm not sure if anyone else suffered this problem but it is truly frustrating trying to walk in a particular direction only to find you are actually going elsewhere. Trying to enter a narrow door way is as challenging as a battle. I feel that adding a fixed, translucent d-pad would help this game a lot. On smaller devices, such as my phone, some of the text over-runs the text boxes. I wish more care was taken when porting this game. You might have difficulty finding this game cheaper but, if you really want to play Final Fantasy without getting frustrated, try it on a different console (Gameboy Advance, PSP, etc). If you don't want to spend that much and are willing to overlook the controls, this is the game for you.
Great way to play a classic
Other reviews describe issues I have not experienced, I haven't had anything that makes the game unplayable (except one time it froze, I closed the app and reopened it and it loaded up from the same point).
The most annoying thing for me is the d-pad is 4 point and not 8 (like the ffvi port) but this might be to do with the original game rather than the port.
Great game, I'm enjoying seeing where it all began. And I understand there are fixes on the original nes version which makes it much more fun to play (e.g. On the nes, If an enemy dies you would attack the air where they stood).
