Description

Firefight is a World War II real-time simulation game with more AI and attention to detail than any other game in its genre to date. Tanks are modelled with a physics engine and have gears, rev counters and speedos, and steer themselves with brake levers to give them realistic looking tracked vehicle movement. Each bullet, shell or piece of shrapnel is modelled in 3D and ricochets realistically off sloping surfaces. You can see each infantryman's rank, name, weapon, ammunition remaining, heart rate and fatigue levels. Machine gunners will call for ammunition when they're running low and other squad members will rush over with spare ammo if they are carrying any. Wounded men call for medics who will sprint over to administer first aid. Off-board artillery can be called in but will have to fire several ranging shots before the full 8 gun battery opens fire simultaneously.

Play either against the sophisticated built-in AI, or play a local network game against a friend using WiFi or Bluetooth.

Superb game!

At first I thought this was going to be any ol’ top down battle simulator game. But it was actually amazing! The combat is fun and thrilling, and it’s especially great when you get the satisfaction of completing at level at three stars or destroying an enemy before they have killed any of your troops. Graphics and features are also in a league of their own. Could use a map creator/ editor, I mostly have the same bugs and glitches as most players. But I haven’t seen the bug where a few soldiers just decide to up and out and return to base? Yeah. Pretty strange. I’ve seen many ideas such as amphibious landings and stuff like that. But other stuff like game modes would be cool. Like airborne. With big and new map where you have to link up with other paras and take the objective, or evacuation (basically wave defence at Dunkirk or something.), and maybe replace artillery with bombing? And add customisation to maps. For example: on a level’s description it says the German defence was shattered by the allied bombing. Maybe add destroyed car and houses? Or maybe some blown up tanks? And some extra factions would be nice, like Canadian forces or foreign Italian aid? There is so much potential for this game’s future and the developer! If there is anybody who can make this game great it’s Sean. A definite 9/10, And a 10/10 to come!

Great game!

This game is great. Cheap for what it offers, a bunch of maps and scenarios, loads of different unit types and good AI. There are a few things though. In the end, all the maps have just 2 objectives: capture the objective and take as few losses as possible, the second of which isn’t required for a victory. I would love to see some more game modes and maps, particularly those set on places like the Pacific and the eastern front. Perhaps, an improvement to the multiplayer aspect would work well too. As of now, it’s quite primitive and you can only pick scenarios from the standard game. Maybe a function to play online with other people across the world and an ability to make custom games to play (pick how many and which units you have and where the objective is). Other than that, the game is great for what it is and is one of the best games I’ve played for playing offline. Some more community support aspects would be great though and maybe making a discord server for the game would help its growth. In the end, it’s a great game and I really hope it advances further in time to come.

Still great!

Played this on Win98 almost 20 years ago and have just bought the full iOS game. Still a great game, although the original was more demanding in some ways because control of units was dependent on having them within radio range, so terrain was very important (walkie-talkies don't work through hills) and HQ squads had to keep up with attacking units. This required careful planning and an element of risk - you couldn't rely on being able to instantly recall/redirect squads once you had issued an order. Might be worth adding this as an option to provide an additional level of challenge!

Some sort of 'stealth' mode might be useful for when you're trying to outflank defences (the 'cease fire' command is a bit of a blunt tool and doesn't allow units respond if discovered).

By the way, anyone who thinks the units take too long to respond / sometimes do crazy things / disregard instructions - well, that's frustrating, but probably more realistic than immediate absolute obedience!
