[*Warning* Playing Frotz involves reading, thinking, and typing. If you just want to blow stuff up, this is not the app for you!]
Burned out on all the new-fangled graphics and dazzling eye candy on your shiny new iPhone or iPad? Nostalgic for a simpler time? Then take advantage of those crisp high-resolution fonts to relive the glory days of the Great Underground Empire, or play any of hundreds of great works from the Interactive Fiction archive.
Frotz lets you play free works of Interactive Fiction (a.k.a. text adventure games) on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad.
Frotz plays titles written in the Z-Machine format (which was invented by Infocom and was used to produce classic text adventures from the 80s such as the Zork Trilogy, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Trinity), as well as glulx and TADS formats.
In the past decade, text adventures have experienced a renaissance due to the efforts of a diverse Internet community of talented interactive fiction writers and fans. Many of these games are written using the same engine that powered Infocom's titles, thanks to the Inform compiler and authoring system created by Graham Nelson.
NOTE! If you have suggestions for improving Frotz or encounter bugs, please go to the support link and report them. I have no way to respond if you only report bugs in reviews!

Ratings and Reviews
It works with iOS 11
Interactive fiction is rewarding and this program is perfect. Don't know which verb to use? Click the booklet! Got a whole load of infocom stories? Load them on Dropbox and "open in..." The dat file directly into frotz! Perfect in every way!
Update v1.5.2: good to see the problem in v1.5.1 with older devices promptly fixed. Works great once again.
Text-adventure games (or interactive-fiction as they are usually called) are something you will either enjoy and be drawn into, or simply find boring/confusing/annoying. Well actually, some of us who enjoy them generally find them annoying at times when our input isn't recognised, but that's something you learn to deal with. If you don't like interactive-fiction, please don't rate this Frotz app down as it running the games just as they are meant to be run.
It's a shame the Infocom adventures are still under copyright and therefore cannot be included in the download, but if you've bought the compilations of them in the past, they are easy to import from your computer via a WiFi link to a server Frotz temporarily enables. The included selection of freely available adventures is very good and enough to keep anyone happy for quite some time, though I was surprised to find the original 'Advent' / Collosal-Caves which started the whole interactive-fiction genre was not included with the app, as it is freely available and probably very well known to every IF player and an essential part of any collection. Advent and hundreds of other IF games in Z-machine are readily available online and can be easily added using Frotz's server though.
Excellent interactive fiction player
Had Frotz for a while (since 1.2) and has went from good to excellent with a number of great new features and bug fixes. Glad to say that since making the http file transfer feature available in 1.4, i finally have been able to transfer my Infocom Masterpieces games over to Frotz. This has a great text input system where commands are auto completed and any word displayed on screen (eg the location description ) can be double tapped to add to the command line.
Frotz also comes bundled with a bunch of text adventure games from the interactive fiction database website so there are plenty to try.
Great stuff for anyone who remembers the original infocom games from the late 70s and 80s. Also for anyone who likes the idea of thinking your way through a game without any flashy graphics. Expect to be frustrated of course as some of the puzzles can be very obscure!
Ipad support has apparently been added in the latest version and i cannot wait to try this excellent app in full screen mode.
Update: I can confirm that Frotz works beautifully on the iPad and would say it is the perfect platform for it. If I could upgrade my 5 star to 6, I would! :-)
