Getting there

In a world of dodgy music players, it nice to come across some software that works without fuss. Yes it lacks some functions I’d like to see and for this reason I won’t be buying just yet.

I use minimserver, so would like to see options to categorise music using specific tags. The lack of playlist. All upnp based software don’t support rating, which I get around using tags, but can’t display this tag.

While the interface is very clean, it lacks a function that every upnp software lacks, save lumin. The ability to resize the cover art. I want to be able to look at cover art with one or two images per screen.

Finally, in a connected world all these players fall down on finding more information about an album, song or artist. The naim app is probably the best at this, but ultimately fails because of the interface. I understand there’s possibly a cost with using good quality sources, but why not offer as an add on purchase?

For the record, I use the following in this order; lumin (lots of features, messy interface), linn kazoo (nice interface, lacks features), naim app (almost nice interface, lacks features). At present beyond these only glider comes close.

Shame none of these apps really do it

Ok, but not without some noticeable glitches, even over a mere 30 minutes. Crashed once, the app screen just disappeared once, and the Chromecast status indicator appeared to be wrong twice (showing offline when it definitely wasn’t). It also spontaneously disconnected from my Chromecast Audio devices. And this morning, it has decided to only play one song (no continuous play). It’s a shame that there’s very little ability to reset anything on the settings screen, and the app seems to resist a soft reset.

Given these obvious glitches, the full version is perhaps a little pricey.

Poor library management, unsuitable for NAS use or large libraries

Mark Vic

The app works quickly and well as a player, however, trying to sync it with a NAS or large library will result in thousands of albums where you’re lucky if it registers two-three songs. There is no way to access route folders (first music app I’ve seen where this isn’t an option), meaning you’re reliant on Glider’s poor library management. This makes it wholly unsuitable as a feed for a streamer and I wish I’d saved my money. Disappointing as the actual player itself is quick and responsive and if you could access route folders it would be a brilliant app.
