Globe for iPad is a Geography app which shows the countries of the world on a 3D globe - you can manipulate the globe with the normal iPad gestures — drag your finger or use a rotate gesture to rotate the globe; pinch to zoom in and out.
Search for a country and the globe will rotate to show that country.
Tap on a country to show country information from Wikipedia.
What's New in Version 1.1
Improvement in CPU usage and some Geographical corrections.
Simple and clean
I understand that the residents of Antarctica, Fiji, Bermuda, The Falkland Islands and Gibraltar are upset that their countries have vanished. I also understand reviewers who are saying that Google Earth offers the same functionality. I just want to say what I like about this app.
It shows the countries of the world (all right MOST countries) in a really clean, clear way, like the "Political" maps in an atlas, without roads, cities, and confusing satellite imagery. This makes it really easy to show children where countries are in relation to each other, and see the relative sizes and latitudes plainly. The Search function is easy, and the Wikipedia link is also easy and clear.
It's perfectly fine for what it sets out to achieve, and the fact that is costs nothing is a great thing.
Things I'd like to see:
1. Inertia movement like Google earth (or like a real globe if you like)
2. More consistent gesture control. Example: If I have been using one finger to scroll, or 2 fingers to zoom, I have to release both fingers, often with a jump on the screen, before I can rotate with 2 fingers. Google Earth has no problem with these things and it would be good to emulate that.
3. Antarctica. It's too big to ignore :)
Great App though Alan!
It's got a nice simple interface making it an easy way to find a country, with info on that country provided from Wikipedia.
However, not all is there to be discovered. I found that Palestine was missing and then reading the reviews I noticed other people have spotted countries missing (small ones admittedly).
Well worth the download but an update at some point in the future to plug the gaps would be nice :)
Nice little app
A really simple and easy to use app. I like the link to wikipedia for more detailed information about each country. The skill of any map maker is deciding what to include and what to discard. I think that the balance has largely been successful. However, i think that Antarctica is a big omission though. The globe within the app makes it look as though the Southern Pole entirely consists of sea.
