EXCELLENT APP FOR THE IPAD - thank you
I saw the RA Summer Exhibition 2013 - some were good, some were childish, some were there to make money, some were exciting and a few were outstanding. Then we walked into the last room and saw Grayson Perry's The Vanity of Small Differences.
It dominated the entire exhibition, occupied an entire room and left me breathless. The calligraphy throughout the work reminded me of Tom Philips, the use of historic references, the design skills in the complex layout and to my eye the sheer genius of it all.
But what about this App?
An excellent use of the iPad to communicate with an audience. I'm so glad that I didn't buy the book at the RA. I do enjoy technology and this App is just what we need to show people the value of iPads and possibly other tablets.
You can zoom in to see details that you couldn't see in the real piece! You get lots of extra details, links, GP facts on the work and other extras. The App is simple to use, it is intuitive and I expect it will be great to push it onto a big screen TV.
This App does not replace seeing the real thing, but it does give details of where to see it. Nothing replaces seeing a work of art, but seeing it and then seeing it again on your iPad is wonderful. I don't know how it would work having the App first and then going to the show.
Well done for taking The Vanity of Small Differences and making it work on an iPad. Quality software for a work of genius - EXCELLENT!
Useful if you know in advance
This app is a great explanation on the Grayson Perry exhibition which is touring, currently in Manchester. I would love to have had it available when I went. However if like me you only find out about it when you get to the exhibition, you also find it is 100Mb and can only be downloaded over WiFi - and that means not in the Art Gallery. That means you can only access it when you get home which is too late because you have already see 90% of the content at the gallery. If you have chance download before you go, take an earpiece and enjoy- otherwise , save your £2!
I went to see the exhibition in Manchester recently and was really impressed by the show. I loved the sketchbooks showing the planning behind the tapestries and his approach. I've seen the TV programs and bought the catalogue for the show. I had hoped that the app would mirror this but with only six sketchbook images and no video clips from the TV programs I feel is not reaching its full potential especially for the price.
I hope to see more additions in the future so that I can recommend this app to students and staff as it is a useful accompaniment to the work
