What's New

Version 1.8.4

We've significantly improved performance by using less memory. This fixes a crash in Depth Mode, and if you use Halide regularly you'll see it open faster! We've also fixed a bug in image loading, and a few other odds and ends.

Is there a bug still bothering you? Just have some feedback? Email and we'll look right into it.

This big update adds an Apple Watch companion app to remotely preview and take shots, a self-timer, and a completely redesigned photo review that makes it easy to go back in time. We also did a ton of work on accessibility to make our app usable for more people.

You can now use your watch as a remote trigger— with a live preview! Whether you want to be in a group photo or want to avoid camera shake during a long exposure, Halide is now available from your wrist. To use, just open Halide on your phone and then open the Halide Apple Watch app. It's really that easy.

If you don’t have an Apple Watch, use the self-timer to take a photo with a delay. To help with group photos, the LED on the back of your iPhone flashes as it counts down. Look for a timer icon in the Quick Bar as well as the shutter button countdown. Forgot the timer was on? Just tap on the shutter again to cancel.

We’re adding a grid-view option in our photo reviewer, similar to the built in photos app. We’ve also changed things so swiping horizontally changes photos. Despite this added view, you can still get back to your camera with a swipe; just swipe down to get back to the viewfinder instantly. Finally, we’ve sped things up for users with gigantic libraries.

We care a lot about accessibility, and in previous updates we already did a lot to make Halide more usable to everyone. This update is our biggest accessibility push yet, with support for Dynamic Type, VoiceOver improvements and much more. Our camera, photo reviewer, and settings reflect the font size you’ve set in iOS Settings. We’ve also improved how things look when “bold text” is enabled in system settings. As always, this update includes small UI improvements (we keep polishing this gem!) and bug fixes.

If you love Halide, be sure to rate us! We don’t prompt for reviews, so every bit helps, and good reviews really help us a ton.

Til next time!

Exceptional app that just needs a few extras

The UI of this app is beautiful. So easy to use and navigate while retaining efficiency and functions. Using this with an iPhone X is a dream and makes full use of the iPhones camera. Incredibly sharp images can be had when paired with the Darkroom app.
The cameras depth function blows apples portrait mode out of the water. The augmented reality view of the depth images is a very cool feature and could potentially be developed further into a 3D scanner when multiple images are taken. Maybe an extra app will be needed for the stitching process.
A function that I’d like to see added to this app is long exposure if possible as the iPhones sensor is particularly bad at high iso noise.
In app purchases are the bane of any iPhone app and this one doesn’t have any! Please keep it that way guys!
A truly great app that’s well worth the money. I’m an analogue photographer, developer and printer by trade but this app makes me want to take pictures with my phone... and actually take the time to make them look good!

Simple but powerful interface

This app is well-suited for smartphone photography, keeping things simple but letting you quickly change settings in an intuitive way, using gestures and easily accessible on-screen icons, without a steep learning curve.

Some users complain that this app doesn’t ‘take better pictures’ or ‘offer more facilities’ than other apps, but that’s missing the point. It’s a no-frills camera app that focuses on the experience of taking photos quickly and effectively and dispenses with fancy filters and effects (which, let’s face it, you can do in dozens of other post processing apps).

I’ve tried many of the other camera apps on my iPhone X and whilst they’re all pretty good, none come close to the ease of use of Halide, which suits me perfectly and always gives very acceptable results.

Still not the best

I wanted to like Halide. On paper, it has all the goodness. There's Depth mode, there's histogram, there's manual focus. I even like the haptic feedback on orientation alignment. But in use, I found I not only got poorer results than the stock Camera app, but it also distracted me from actually shooting my photos "in the moment". Clearly if I want a serious photo, I get out my SLR. But in situations where I need a fast camera, the iPhone is what I use. Unfortunately, I don't find Halide gives me the type of quality results I need that I can quickly tweak and upload with minimal editing. For that, I get better results with ProCamera, which although it has less features, I find it easier to get a finished result I'm happy with.
