Hokusai is a multitrack audio editor for iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Record or import a track, and make it sound the way you want it to: not just trimming the ends, but full cut, copy, paste and delete, and a suite of filters and special effects available.
"Beautiful clutter-free interface" — TouchProducer.com
"Hokusai will convince you that audio was meant to be edited with a touch screen — it's just so natural within this app that you’ll find yourself consistently coming back to it." — iOS Music And You
Edit many tracks side-by-side, mix them together, and export to Wave or MP4 format — then transfer them to your computer, send them to another app on your device, or upload to cloud services.
Hokusai is streamlined to give you a clean, clear view of your tracks. Use the familiar pinch and swipe gestures to zoom right in and fiddle with fine detail, or step back to see the big picture. Select pieces of audio. Live "scrubbing" means you can hear the sound under your fingertip as you make your adjustments. And you needn't fear a bad edit with our full undo/redo support — even after closing your project.
Hokusai comes free with a set of useful tools such as fade in/out, normalise volume levels, reverse time, and basic synthesis. If you need more power, you can upgrade from inside the app to add new tools and effects, including: Per-track volume/mute/panning, selecting across multiple tracks at once, presets and favourites, grain synthesis, noise gating, time-stretching, pitch-bending, echo, reverb, modulation (AM & FM), resonance, distortion, grunge, vocal levelling, monster voice, high/low/band-pass/notch-cut filter and more — many of which can be previewed live.

Ratings and Reviews
I have been a working voice actor for about six years now. In that time I have created numerous home studios with expensive processors, computers, microphones and acoustic treatment.
One thing I have always found to be near impossible is to put together a portable at a reasonable price. I’ve used my old Zoom H2 and a laptop at times and the results have been good but the laptop has always been a pain in the neck to cart about.
I’ve had Hokusai for a year or two and it was clear from the start that there was potential to use this app to make money from my voice no matter where I was in the world. The limitations though were that the iPads I had previously were difficult to connect to microphone and didn’t really have the grunt to cope with the intensive audio editing required in my work.
All this changed with the iPad Pro 2017. Now I can hook up my H2 via the usb 3 connection kit and it will record directly into Hokusai. The sound quality is good enough for professional purposes.
The processing power of the iPad Pro turns Hokusai into as good a tool as the Adobe Audition software I use at home and the cherry on the cake is IOS 11 which allows me to deliver, store and archive the audio I record and edit with Hokusai.
The effects such as noise removal are superb. I would go so far as to say better than Adobe.
If you are looking for the best in IOS audio recording and editing, don’t waste your time elsewhere, Hokusai is everything you need and more.
I haven’t time for a huge review today, which is a shame, because this app warrants lots of praise.
I have paid, gladly, for the full version and I have found its completeness and user friendliness to be outstanding.
I had a couple of troubles and was disappointed to find poor online guidance (on my problem - the online tutorials / help is excellent) so emailed the developer.
I have never ... not ever ... had such a responsive and helpful developer. Truly exceptional app and follow-on customer service.
Bloody well done.
In a nutshell - "poor features making it useless for any significant audio editing yet easy to use and looks good".
I installed the basic free version to record & edit sounds for possible use in music creation. It offers nothing of significance regarding audio editing. Convert between mono/stereo and a limited trim function.... that's your bag. No carrot n stick for me to proceed to the in app purchases. Yeah there is a tone generator but without fx it sounds lifeless.
This basic free version needs to be much more equipped with features to hook me in. I'll move on to something else and gladly pay for the right product. Cool Edit/Soundforge this is not. Beats me why some reviews gave it 5.
Hello! The free version of Hokusai also offers tools to apply fades, normalise audio, adjust the volume levels (including using custom curves), and reverse audio. You can find these by selecting the audio you want to apply them to, and tapping "More...". The paid version of Hokusai includes dozens of editing features, around 50 in total at time of writing — if you open the upgrade panel and tap "Preview the Upgrade", you'll find a full list, and you can try most of them out for free on a piece of example audio, to see if they meet your needs before deciding whether to pay for the upgrade or not. We can't just give them away for free though — I realise that might be disappointing, but app developers also need to eat and pay bills 🙂 Hope that helps!
