Customer Reviews

Software as it should be

There is no noticeable difference between the functionality of 3.1.2 and 3.1.1 (the 3.1.2 bug fix was in an area I had not used). This software is an excellent example of what software should be - well conceived, well designed and well implemented. No shoddy shortcuts, no anomalous behaviour, an (almost) perfect user interface. For years now I have been trying to make a personal inventory - I have tried spreadsheets, photo journals, filing cabinets and a couple of commercial “apps” which did not deserve the title “application”. Home Inventory has provided the long sought after solution. Enough user-configuration options to allow the program to be used the way I want to rather than the way the designer has forced me to, but not so much as to be confusing and unwieldy. Big plusses - the manual bar-code entry system that allowed me to catalogue 300 DVD’s, 230 CD’s and 500 books in a couple of afternoons - the input-receipts-from-scanner system that is slick and efficient and which has allowed me to enter a drawerful of receipts in a couple of evenings - the add photos with drag and drop - the abiity to assign a single photo (or receipt) to multiple entries so saving on storage space. Minuses - if you don’t know the exact date you cannot enter just the year. If you do, the input is accepted, but the date is changed to “today’, “this month”, entered year - and I haven’t found any more minuses except for some annoying “quit unexpectedlies” which may be down to Mavericks not Home Inventory! E-mail feedback from the company is excellent, with rapid responses to a couple of queries I had - including the date issue which “might” be fixed in version 4. This program is superb value at just £14 - if in doubt, go for it - you won’t be sorry.
