i3D is an overview of Head-Coupled Perspective (HCP) on iOS devices. HCP uses the front camera of the device to track the face of the user in real time. This information tells the app how the user is looking at the display. The app updates the perspective of the 3D scene accordingly, giving the user the illusion that he looks at a small window.

i3D contains several 3D scenes that you can observe with HCP. It only relies on face tracking. It does not use the accelerometers or the gyroscopes.

The face tracking system does not detect and track the face in every lighting condition. Read the instructions in the app to get a good tracking.

Head-Coupled Perspective does not create a stereoscopic display! It provides a kind of monocular 3D display: the same picture is seen by both eyes. In the future, it might be combined with a stereoscopic display for a better 3D effect.

i3D has been developed by Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay at the Engineering Human-Computer Interaction (EHCI) Research Group of the Grenoble Informatics Laboratory (LIG), University Joseph Fourier (UJF).

Inefficient technology

This technology is quite pointless because face tracking is an inefficient way to provide mechanism on a 3D monoscopic effect. There's a lot obstacles like the lightning conditions when tracking the face so the 3D objects FREEZES if the conditions in the background are bad but it can't even sometimes detect the face in normal exposure. In fact, using the accelerometer & gyroscope is much more effective because they can provide 3D effect by just moving the device around without having to move your head minding the conditions however, I guess this can be improved by including the utilisation of gyroscope & accelerometer with face tracking. There should be developments to be made.

I'm going to give this app 5 stars even though there are a few problems. The face tracking used reaches it's outer limits and seems to freeze becoming very glitchy and jolty, all you need to do is face the camera directly and after a few seconds the face detection software will reset itself. The idea and concept of this app is like none I have seen before, I can see this being developed to something truly fascinating. Definitely worth the download, after all, it is free!

Ignore the idiots below

This app is incredibly clever. Look beyond the slight glitches and see what it's doing and the potential. Plus it's free, the developers are just doing this for your good. No ads, no payments, they get no money. Thanks guys for all your hard work. Unlike the idiots giving one star reviews because they are too stupid to follow simple instructions.
