The International Children's Digital Library (ICDL) brings a worldwide collection of free children's books to the iPad. The largest collection of its kind, the ICDL spans the globe with thousands of children's books from over 60 countries, in a wide assortment of beautiful languages with captivating illustrations. Meet the six Mongolian brothers in search of knowledge, the gray Palestinian peacemaker cat that does something most unusual to the other cat's ears, or a version of the Three Little Pigs that you surely have never heard before.
The ICDL is brought to you on the iPad with the kind support of the University of Maryland's Human-Computer Interaction Lab and the International Children's Digital Library Foundation. It presents:
* The full ICDL collection (thousands of books)
* Completely free
* Books in dozens of languages
* iPad support for rotation (automatically shows two pages at a time in landscape view)
* All books have summaries in English and the native language of the book
* Special support for readability - by zooming text (for many books)
* Many books translated into other languages
The goal of the library is to excite and inspire young readers to become better world citizens by leveraging technology to reach underserved children who have little access to libraries. The ICDL is offered free of charge to everyone, everywhere with no advertising.
If you value the ICDL or feel some resonance with our mission, please visit us at www.childrenslibrary.org to learn how you can help!
Fixed iOS 4.2 bug where it would sometimes crash on launch. Sorry!
Ratings and Reviews
Poor - needs loads of improvement!
Many of the books I try to download/read, I get the message: "cannot be read on this device" (not on a browser and not even using the ICDL app) - Appalling!
A second issue is when I chose a title I expect that book to open/show available pages, but here I get blank pages instead!
(although the message says to click on the pages to view them - its all blank)
The third issue is regarding the Portuguese translation(s)...
I have chosen a particular title in Portuguese, but when I flicked through the first pages, I realised the book was in Spanish instead!
(It's like choosing Scottish and getting Welch instead!)
Then, a forth issue is when I selected the app (and the site) to be in Portuguese, but here I noticed the Portuguese language is Brazilian rather European. The same for the books availed in Portuguese languageq...
The problem is; out of the 9 countries in the world that speak Portuguese, only Brazilian is very different and hard(er) to understand.
Many Brazilian Portuguese words are different, some no longer in use and others have been very americanised!
This makes very difficult to teach my son Continental Portuguese, while living in Australia, with limited resources.
Good but could be better
This app allows the reading of multi-language children's books in comfort or when psuedo-mobile (WiFi better than phone network) - and it requires using over a period to appreciate its merits.
Originally, I reviewed the app less favourably, but using it has caused me to grow fonder of it.
The interface still seems a bit crude for an iPad app, and it can seem to get stuck in a loop constantly opening the ICDL website, but this is one of those rare apps where the content is so good that the interface is forgiven somewhat.
Nevertheless, if it is developed further to have full-screen and swipe, it could be an even better resource.
Amazing app that provides quality books in so many varieties! My six year and I are thrilled!
Up to six family members will be able to use this app with Family Sharing enabled.
