The Heart and the Bottle is a great story illustrated beautifully. The app that brings the story to life has turned something wonderful into an amazing reading experience. The story narration is a plus and the fact that each page offers a variety of interactive activities gives the story a very original feel.
My daughters (9 and almost 3) simply loved the app and spent almost 30 minutes on it the first time they saw it. They had read the book already but found the interaction with the story quite fun. Interestingly, they were able to discover the features of the app without much help. My oldest daughter found the tips section really helpful and my youngest simply followed her sister. The only difficult part was turn-taking! It might be great to create these apps with multi-touch support and allow two or more kids read and play with the story at the same time!
TERRIBLE. DO NOT BUY THIS APP !!!
This app is absolutely dreadful. The animation is poor, the interactive elements are not engaging at all and the quality of the download is lamentable. It offers a very ponderous experience for kids. On top of that, I found frequent dropout, unexplained pauses and jagged lines of interference across the screen. I deleted the app from my iPad with the intention of downloading it again to see if it worked any better. Unfortunately - unlike with iTunes music and movies - I'm being asked to pay another £3.99 in order to reinstall something I've already paid for. Most annoying. All told this has been a dreadful experience. I wanted to give it zero stars but apparently that's not an option. Avoid this app - there are numerous better ones out there and the Oliver Jeffers Lost and Found film, which is delightful, is only £2.49 on iTunes and is 24 minutes long. Buy that instead.
Something Different and Quite Lovely
This is not your average picturebook app. There is so much more than meets the eye, and each scene rewards exploration. It's visually gorgeous, and the interaction is intelligent and delightful. I missed lots of little things first time round, and have been surprised ovre and over again at the charm and detail of some of the elements.
One word of advice to all - use the HINTS buttton at the top of the screen to really get the most out of this wonderful reading experience.
