Description

OS MapFinder is our overview mapping app. It’s ideal if you’d like to see the whole of Great Britain and then choose a tile, a region, or one of the 15 National Parks’ maps to buy and download in more detail (in-app purchase required).

• If you’re looking for the app that’ll help you download a digital version of an OS paper map, you need OS Maps (not OS MapFinder).

OS MapFinder is a large download. With it, you can search our 1:250 000 scale road map by place name, postcode or address. You won’t even need an internet connection to search as it also works offline. Then, via the in-app options, you can buy the OS Landranger (1:50 000) and OS Explorer (1:25 000) close-up maps of the areas you’d like to focus on – and after purchase, those maps will always be available on your device too.

EXPLORE MORE WITH OS
Plan your route in advance using our route-planning tools, or track your location (with your phone) using the integrated GPS. Discover Britain’s hidden treasures, things like historic monuments and mountain peaks, or just go for a ramble and use the map to discover more of the landscape. See how long it will take on average to walk your favourite routes – plan, plot and review your own walks, runs and cycle rides, knowing you have the features and reliability of our Explorer and Landranger paper maps to hand.

Ordnance Survey maintains Great Britain’s definitive digital mapping database. With purchases made via OS MapFinder, you’ll have access to high-resolution map tiles, regions, or National Park maps that work anywhere regardless of signal.

OS MapFinder includes:

• A free overview of Great Britain at 1:250 000 scale
• Free road maps down to street level
• Options to buy high-resolution OS Explorer and OS Landranger maps
• Route recording and planning tools – record your routes in real time
• Route import and export functions
• Time, distance, OS grid references, latitude and longitude
• Select a route, see how long it will take on average to walk
• Place name look-up – postcodes and places in Great Britain
• Ordnance Survey grid reference look-up
• And useful tips on how to read and navigate maps

Customer Support
Our team is here to help if you get any problems with OS MapFinder. If you can, check the FAQs first at https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/shop/mapfinder.html, or contact us via our online customer service portal at https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/contact/

App and Map sizes
The app is a large download. It has to save the maps and search database to your device. Please make sure your device has enough free space and you’re connected to a stable WiFi point before starting the download. The purchasable map sections are around 60MB each. If you want to save space, you can remove a purchased map section from your device, and then download it again (free of charge) when you next need it.

UPDATES:

Any 100 km2 map tiles purchased will be updated for FREE under a revision program. Tile updates are unlimited for the life of the application*.

Map tiles once purchased through your iTunes account can be uploaded onto all devices registered to that account (i.e. if you purchase on iPhone you do not have to repurchase on iPad). To do this, simply go to "My Maps" from the menu and then tap the sync symbol (In the top right). You will need to enter your Apple id and the app will start syncing.

Users who are having difficulty in finding purchased maps should make sure they are zooming in far enough.

*or until 31st March 2016 (whichever is longer), updates will generally occur bi-annually as we update our mapping.

Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life..

Customer Reviews

My absolute favourite app

Makes me proud to be British. Aren't our maps just beautiful? The app allows me to plan and measure routes accurately whilst being simple and intuitive. BUT it could be better.

Main gripe: why don't my purchases appear on multiple devices? At the moment I am buying map tiles on my iPhone and buying them again on my tablet. Making me feel pretty grieved.

Supplementary gripe: seems an omission not to have the facility to track a route that you have walked/run/cycled. Then again it may be that I just haven't figured it out yet.

Deleted trail reappears when app is opened

An example trail that was created, and then deleted, is automatically imported into the app as soon as it opens.

Looks good, reasonably smooth operation, but the ability to hide the trail detail panel on the iPad would be nice.

Slow development

I use this app a fair amount when I'm in the UK but I am just so disappointed that it is not gaining the new features required to make this the awesome app that it has the potential to be!

Key features that need to be added include the ability to add POI and for the maps to have elevation data included. Elevation data would make the estimated time of planned routes more accurate and would also allow for a comprehensive route summery to be presented.

As others have said, the tiles are still pretty expensive as you inevitably need three or four for a decent route which makes it a rather expensive way of getting your maps.

Finally an apple watch app would be a great companion to the phone app, I know it's probably not a top priority but if tied in with the heart rate monitor etc could allow for some really cool new features.
