Optimizations and Bug Fixes
Improved and as addictive as ever
Excellent. After a couple of hours of play, I'm happy that I spent another couple of quid on this. Ace Patrol was one of my favourite games of 2013 and this is better.
It looks crisper but the improvements are not just aesthetic. There is now a speed system and the player is informed of their current speed level, which dictates the available moves. I think a few new moves have also been added and you can now see an explanation of the icons on your available flight cards without needing to go look them up.
New planes also look lovely. Zero vs Hellcat anyone? Hard to resist. My advice: buy it.
Is there any support for this?
The game is great, with great graphics and gameplay.
However...the game will not save any of my progress. So every time I play it I have to do all the missions over and over and over again. This drains the game of all enjoyment. I feel a bit conned having shelled out where such an utterly basic thing as the save doesn't work.
I contacted app support. I was ignored. I sent a chaser. I was ignored. It seems that independent developers are the only ones who actually bother to respond to people who invest in their products. Don't these guys have the slightest pride in their products and reputation? I guess not when they can sit back and rake it in.
No point buying this over the original.
In gameplay terms, there are some (IMO) trivial tweaks to pilots' country-of-origin perks. And the skins for the new nations are, well, new.
Other than that, this is the original game with a whole new price tag. I'm lost as to why it couldn't have been an IAP tagged onto the original, as it adds literally nothing of substance or significance.
I enjoyed the original a great deal (though began to find it tedious in later levels). It's not a bad game and does shine with some Meier-esque originality (there certainly aren't any directly comparable games I can think of) though, tbh, the graphics really aren't great.
All in all, it's a lovely idea, with unbeautiful implementation. I'd definitely be nudging up towards 3 or 4 stars, were it not for the fact that there is just no justification - afaict - for releasing this as a new and separate app. I feel its dearth of originality (over v1) rendered it a wholesale waste of £3, and I kinda expect better of Sid Meier titles.
