Brilliant Idea, needs more 3rd parties
I’m new to IFTTT, but i have coding and DIY electronics background. This is easy and intuitive, it has great potential to become ultimate automation tool for everything connected. But not all things are here to be connected. Some fail. I’m looking at you Strava, promised so much... didn’t work out at the end. Some are limited to only “not that useful” features, like notifications only. Some work one way only, yes Instagram we can post YOU everywhere, but you don’t return the favour. Some are bound by really strict OS limitation, yes Apple you not best platform for innovation. No system setting manipulation by IFTTT. No wifi, data, or even ring volume switch on iOS? Ugh. And that was the very first reason to get this app. To mute my ringer at office. Ended up using it to turn on off lamps, sending cycling reports, notifying friends and family when I'm around via slack. This is fun.
Great idea but too slow
Works OK as it is - will switch on alarm when I leave and off when I return etc. However, only one 'if' and then one 'then' is rather limiting. It needs multiple 'if's with connecting ORs and ANDs to be really useful.
Update 1: initial good experience has now been replaced by frustration at the frequent slow response times. Connecting to an alarm it often does not arm it until I'm miles away, and then does not disarm when I return and the alarm goes off! So I have to check my phone every time to make sure - this rather defeats the main objective of IFTTT!
Update 2: Using location services to find out whether I am in the house or not in order to decide whether to arm an alarm is chaos. Went for a walk today going up to 1.5miles from home (3.6 miles in all):
12:15 - Arm, 12:17 - Disarm, 12:29 - Arm, 12:49 - Disarm, 12:52 - Arm, 13:26 - Disarm. That’s 3 Arm/Disarm cycles when only one would be expected! Looking at a map on the phone it always clearly shows exactly where I am!
So Good I Forget It’s There
I have been using IFTTT for multiple years now and my day would never function quite so smoothly without it. The wide range of services that can be linked up make it invaluable. I have also found that so many other application can become so much more when paired with IFTTT. When I really think about it I use IFTTT applets all day everyday. But (for the most part) they work so smoothly that I forget it’s even there. One thing just leads to the next and I never notice IFTTT acting as the middleman. Fantastically powerful app. Attractive and easy to use UI. I cannot praise this service enough for the huge value it adds to everything it touches. Give it a chance, apply it to a problem and see what it can do!
