Version 1 and 2 of this app were truly terrible, but slowly and surely the bugs have been squashed and the app is now elegant and reliable. There are no ads anymore, thank goodness.

The journalism is better than on the website, as there is much less click bait. The political stance of the paper is liberal-or-die. It isn't truly centrist, is quite partisan to its own beliefs, and so isn't dispassionately independent. But it is refreshing.

Sub-editing of headlines and news in brief has taken a turn for the worse in the last couple of weeks.

There are good writers, still. Tom Peck's sketch is often inspirational, there are proper leaders, and Simon Calder and other writers are very readable.

On big stories, there is often way too much duplication of content with journalists often writing exactly the same article again and again, which makes for a dull read. And there is an over-preponderance of food, travel and huge amounts of sport at the expense of features, culture and science. It would be nice to be able to jettison this chaff rather than have to wade through it.

The Editor needs to redress this imbalance before it gets five stars from this long-time reader of the print edition.

Rating my favourite read for unbiased news

For years I heard people rate t he Independent very highly, but it took a long time till I despaired of the biased reporting of Jeremy Corbyn and other important issues in the newspaper I read on line, and decided to switch. I was amazed to find quite a different view of the one I support. But it is the other issues that the paper covers adds up to a five star rating.
This is definitely the most progressive and Fair paper I have ever read. It consistently unearths and promotes the news and views of stories and voices of those who really care for our country, and for what goes on throughout the world. It is a relief to get away from the biased and deceitful of the press elsewhere.

A bit of a mess

I have this on a month's trial and will not be renewing. It has been the only thing that has brought me close to doing serious damage to my iPad because at times the Independent app has made want me want to hurl it out the window in frustration. My main complaints are the fact that days-old stories still feature, making it difficult to work out what is old and what is fresh news. The advert pop-ups drive me crazy, the app keeps asking me to log in each day, the sports results are non-existent.
I wanted to try an alternative to the Times mainly because I like the content more in the Independent. But this app is at a stage where it is not justifiable to be asking for a fee for something that is a long way from being satisfactory.

Update: And now 5 years later.....I receive a response from the ! Doesn’t suggest things are improved one bit. Unbelievable.
