Editors’ Notes

As its name suggests, Insight Timer started as a simple timer app for meditating. But it’s evolved into a comprehensive (and award-winning) way to help people reduce anxiety, improve their sleep, and maybe even gain a little insight along the way. It features thousands of guided meditations across a range of styles: Buddhist mindfulness (which channels your inner monk), Kundalini yoga (which focuses on your posture), walking meditation (which is meditation on the move), and many others. Lessons range from just a few minutes to long and luxurious.

NeptunePrince ,

I almost never write app reviews. But now I absolutely have to.

This is hands down the best meditation app I have ever used. And I have tried many, always inevitably hitting the paywall before I could truly appreciate the content. I have been battling mood swings and depression for most of my life now. Most times when I tried to meditate, I simply failed, unable to stay still, focus on my breath and maintain control of my constantly buzzing mind. I thought, maybe this just isn’t for me. But I could not give up. My desperate need for inner peace kept me trying. And then I came across the Insight Timer and listened to a meditation session by the lovely Sarah Blondin and I was so impressed. It did actually work! Now I am hooked and I meditate every single day and this time around it’s not a chore, it is a treat! If you give this one a go, you are likely to end up subscribing not as much because you need to access the premium features, but because you genuinely want to say your thanks to the teachers by supporting them! I could not be more grateful. ❤️

Far too bossy now

I used to love Insight Timer for its clarity, simplicity and choice. It’s now far too complicated, busy and fiddly. I used to be able to go straight there and meditate. Now I have to wait while somebody’s idea of a meaningful quotation appears on the screen, sits there for several seconds and then portentously fades away. Maybe some people want this, but why can’t the rest of us disable it? We don’t all want to have an algorithm dictate the agenda for our meditation. Same goes for the ugly little emojis that have appeared, demanding that every possible moment you choose one of them to say how you feel. It makes me feel as if my soul is some sort of public washroom facility where I’m invited to hit the button before I leave to say how clean I found it. None of this has anything to do with meditation. No doubt the developers will say that the quotations are carefully curated and the emojis are there to help guide us on our journey. But meditation is about finding your own path, not about being given a text to think about. If I wanted that (which I don’t), I would go to church and listen to a sermon (no thanks). And emojis are essentially about mindlessness and have no place in a space supposedly dedicated to mindfulness.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your honest review. We appreciate all the reviews we get to allow us to learn & grow.
There will be updates coming where by items like the quotes and check-ins can be disabled. I agree that meditation is a journey of your own, Insight Timer is there to help those users who may not know which way to go and help with, the check-in feature also allows us to recommend content based on how you are feeling.
Should you wish to go straight to the Timer or your bookmarks you can change the home screen to jump straight to those.
Any issues please reach out to help@insighttimer.com
With thanks
