Butterflies are in trouble. A third of UK species are threatened and three-quarters are in decline. Butterfly recording is the foundation for protecting these beautiful creatures. The iRecord Butterflies app helps you to identify the butterflies that you see, but also uses your sightings to help save butterflies.
Sightings will be stored within the “iRecord” website and passed onto the “Butterflies for the New Millennium” national recording scheme run by the charity Butterfly Conservation, with support from the Biological Records Centre. This long-running scheme has gathered millions of butterfly sightings that provide vital information about how the fortunes of butterflies have changed over the decades. Your sightings will be used to understand the causes of decline and to inform conservation work on the ground to help threatened species.
Scientists could not do this work without the help of people across the UK, like you, reporting when and where they find a species.

Excellent Citizen Science App for Butterfly lovers
This App is an excellent contribution to Citizen Science enabling the user to identify Butterflies using the excellent Gallery pictures and then to record them giving precise locations. These feed into Butterfly Conservation's central recording and contribute to the overall picture of UK Butterfly distribution and timings of emergence and arrivals etc.
My only reservations are the interface is a little clunky - it does not offer up Location Names that you have already used for instance (BirdTrack does this and makes it easier to use) and the interface is similar to, but slightly different from, similar Apps for Ladybirds, Mammals and Bird recording -a standardised approach would be helpful. However, these are minor gripes (opportunities for future imporvement) and it is a splendid App.
Great I.D & citizen science app
A wonderful, simple and informative app that will help you not only to identify butterflies but quickly and easily upload your sightings so scientists can gain a better understanding of them. My hasty mis-identification of a
Large Skipper was thankfully challenged a few hours after submission by eagle-eyed moderators (thanks to the ability to attach a photo of your sighting), so also a good way to improve your ID skills under expert tutelage! Only suggestion for improvement would be the eventual addition of a caterpillar ID guide and perhaps also day-flying moths.
A very good, fun and worthwhile app for adults and children alike. Spot a Butterfly, then look through the superb photos on the app to find which it is you are looking at. There is a thorough description of each species and has a link if you require more information on the species. Once you have identified the the Butterfly, you can report it's position that it was found in.
