The Welsh Great Escape began on the 10th March 1945. 70 German prisoners of war escaped from Camp 198 on the outskirts of Bridgend. The site is known locally as Island Farm. Only one building remains - Hut 9 - the hut that housed the escape tunnel. Hut 9 is now a Grade II listed building, inhabited by bats and is rarely accessible to the general public. The Island Farm app explores the history of the site from pre World War ll when it was still farmland, through the war preparations, war time, the escape and on to present day. Augmented reality is used to recreate the buildings that no longer exist and 3D animations to enable exploration of the interior of the building as it would have been in the build up to the escape and on the night of the escape. Interactive maps are used to show the layout of the camp as it once was, how far the escapees travelled and to highlight related points of interest in the Bridgend area.

Brilliant and effective exploration of the local heritage

Matthew Griffiths

Really impressive, content rich exploration of this little-known but fascinating site and its historical importance. This app is the outcome of a partnership between a local authority which really cares about local heritage and the volunteers who have researched and documented Island Farm. This shows off really well how a rich media application can communicate historical understanding.

Before seeing this app I knew very little about Island Farm!
This app is a great source of information on this little-known, but important, part of Bridgend history. Easy and intuitive to use. The videos are amazing, and really convey the atmosphere of the camp.
Definitely worth downloading if you have any interest in this subject.

Great app, well worth a look !

I am so glad that Bridgend County Borough Council have released this app. Island Farm (Special camp 198) is part of Bridgend's history and Hut 9 of special interest due to the escape of German P.O.W's in 1945. Very educational and interesting, well done to BCBC, MJR Solutions and Brett Exton.
If your interested in Bridgend and or WW2 then this is a must, well worth downloading :-)
