Ratings and Reviews
Good app, but could be better
What I like about this app: can download my books & carry them with me across my iPad & iPhone; “x-ray” feature to look up different characters previously mentioned in book; book recommendations; info & reviews about a book. I love the “Uncollected” collection, but wish I could collect more than one book at a time (I tend to buy many books at the same time).
What I don’t like: it can be rather unresponsive when I go into the app & I'm stuck in my “Collections” pages; can’t see what other books are in a series, or whether I have already purchased them; can’t purchase books from app; if I leave a page to go back to a previous page, the app doesn’t always take me back to the page I was originally on; I cannot select several books simultaneously to move to a certain Collection; when I search for a particular author & type in a first name (eg “Jennifer”) it brings up all the books I have bought that contains “Jennifer” in no particular order. Books by the same author are not necessarily grouped together neither are books that are in the same series. Finally, most of the time I struggle to post my review of a book. App just seems unresponsive/ slow & won’t let me type anything. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve turned the WiFi back on (I turn on airplane mode to conserve battery while reading).
Everything in your hand!
I have used Kindle since Kindle keyboard became available in U.K. I was concerned initially that it would not be the same as a book, the feel of opening a new book for the first time, the touch and smell.
I need not have worried, from the start it was fabulous. Being able to carry my whole library in my hand was amazing, I fell in love totally. I bought a second smaller Kindle to fit into a smaller handbag, bought my husband one and my sister. I installed the app on various other devices so it didn't matter where I was or what I had with me I could read.
I discovered a whole host of new authors by using the free books that were available and they have now been added to my favourites list.
I know it's stupid but I was really devastated a few months ago when I was distracted enough to leave my first beloved Kindle keyboard in the seat pocket when I left a flight. I can't describe how upset I was when I realised it's loss. It felt like a bereavement. Of course only the machine was lost, my library was intact in the ether. I can't think of any reason good enough not to get a Kindle, I would encourage anyone of any age to try it, and at the end of the day it doesn't stop you reading paper books aswell if you really want to!
All books on the Kindle rather than just one.
I have had a Kindle for about 9 years- the ebook and the kindle fire. I had found it difficult holding and turning the pages of larger books, especially if reading in bed and am also partially - sighted so the fact you can increase the size of the text and use text to speech was very handy. I have always enjoyed reading- I was an English teacher- and find the Kindle handy to take out and about with me and especially on holiday rather than bulky books. They are also a boon to kids who have reading difficulties because the text etc can be tailored to suit them and of course they are ‘cooler’ than actual book, especially to boys, because they are in tablet form! When I downloaded the app to my iPhone, it was even more convenient and less weight to carry and I, literally, (pardon the pun), always had a book at my fingertips! I still haven’t mastered all the ways to use the app on my phone fully but will eventually. Despite my love of actual books, I would never go back voluntarily to them. My Kindles are too convenient and easy to use in all circumstances. I have recommended them to family members and friends as I think they are fantastic.
