Version 9.8.2

To increase the helpfulness of international Highlights, any of the hundreds of thousands of German Highlight tips you come across on komoot will now be automatically translated into English. This allows you to read and understand all of the need-to-known info at a glance—and to be more confident when exploring international Highlights.

In order to keep supporting the expanding capabilities of the latest operating systems, this version of komoot will also be the final version available for devices using iOS 9. To ensure you can continue to use komoot, however, we have optimized this version for ongoing use until you choose to upgrade to iOS 10 or higher. Until then, your komoot experience will not change—you just won’t be able to upgrade to the most recent version of the app until you first update your OS.

Ok but lacks detailed consideration

This ok is pretty good and one of the best of its kind that I’ve found.

That said, it does have its issues. The routing engine is clunky. It’s very hard to lay your own specific route as you have to place way marks all over the place to make the route komoot has cosen fit what you want. This isn’t always easy! They should take a look at an app called footpath and replicate their routing experience.

Also the watch app is rubbish. That’s a real shame too. There is no map visible on the phone and directions can be way out and well behind the phone. As an example I recently had the phone in one hand and the watch on the other. Th watch presented a simple arrow saying “in 290 feet”. The phone verbally said turn right NOW with the map visible to see where!! It’s as if the watch is just taking notifications rather than computing anything itself and is pretty rubbish. We would have been lost in the woods without the phone!

One other issue is the general accuracy of the app. My track lines were well off the rout line. Not good.

I had os maps running on another phone right next to this one and it was MUCH better all around.

I think komoot is a great idea but they have a long way to go to make this app simple to use and useably functional.

Great tool for hiking

Burlington Berty

I used this app on my iPhone walking in the Algarve to augment a somewhat ambiguous Cicerone walking guide with outdated and misleading directions. It rescued the day, identifying established walking routes and keeping us on track. It’s a great tool to use when mapping isn’t up to the standard we enjoy with Ordnance Survey mapping in the UK. Not sure I’d recommend it for use in the UK over a mapping app such as ‘Outdoors’ (which uses Ordnance Survey maps) but this is a brilliant asset for use when good off-road mapping isn’t available. It can be heavy on battery usage so I’d recommend carrying a portable micro phone charger such as the Goji for longer excursions. It’s possible to download maps world wide (for a modest in-app purchase) to use offline in more remote areas.

Fantastic. I wish I'd found it earlier though!

I used this to map a two-week cycle tour going around the Republic of Ireland. It worked fantastically well: I was able to plot my daily rides using the web interface, adding my own waypoints and avoiding main roads, then downloaded all the routes for offline use. I used a bluetooth headset for the voice-directed navigation and rarely had to take the phone out to check the map.

I especially appreciated that if you go off-route, it guides you back on to it, rather than re-plotting what it thinks is the fastest way to your destination from wherever you happen to be.

There were a couple of glitches such as it telling you to take a right turn where in fact the road is just bending right, and occasional tricky cases at complicated junctions where an instruction to "go straight on" can be ambiguous. But it quickly tells you if you've gone wrong, and I never got lost.

I would recommend app this unreservedly.
