Komoot uses background audio service for voice navigation messages.
Komoot requires a GPS signal for directions, Tour recording and speed in real-time.
Please note: Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

Great app for ‘born again cyclists’
There you go, just coined a new phrase for people of my age (late fifties) returning to cycling after 35 or so years absence. This app ticks almost all the boxes for me, covering on and off road routes quite well. I use it to put routes together primarily on quite country roads. I ignore all the tagging / sharing stuff (key reason I shelved strava) and use it to plan and record routes. Like it very much. 2 weakness: 1) doesn’t always select off road tracks suitable for hybrid or road bikes, something I learned the hard way on a couple of routes in the Dales and Galloway. To address this I use a combination of the UK Maps and Google Maps apps to verify what the tracks are really like. Second weakness is when creating a route it does not always take the most logical route (the one you would like it to!) There is a workaround for this by continuing to add waypoints as the new destination one step at a time, in effect you tell it step by step rather than asking it to figure it out. This is a better solution than risking being on an unforgiving mountain bike trail on a hybrid.
Maybe it will improve over time as its knowledge of UK tracks improves, who knows. In the meantime, it does for me.
This Has Made My Cycling Life So Much Better
After few years using a Garmin Navigator and then Googlemaps (need smartphone when in areas I don’t know in case lost) I decided to get Komoot and pay for offline maps prior to 3 week trip in France.
And it has been fantastic. Plotting routes on laptop and then navigating with smartphone has been seamless.
Good for setting routes once you get used to it, whether to point A and back same route or creating circular routes.
I was dubious but after 3 weeks of tours it never failed me and always took me on great routes avoiding main roads - of course helped by the fact cycling is so much better catered for in France.
Good also at getting you get back on planned tour when you veer off by accident or on purpose.
Voice navigation works well so saves on battery as most of the time can have screen off.
Have used it for routes through cities and remote countryside.
I choose Touring route option as on trekking bicycle. Also can choose mountain and road bicycle routes.
Highly recommended if you want to plan and follow routes. Generally my routes have been 40 to 65 Miles.
