◆ A Modular Instrument for Music Production ◆

KRFT is a modular instrument for expressive music production that we built to challenge the two decade old paradigm of the multi-track DAW.

Designed from the ground up with a focus on live experimentation and expressive interactions, KRFT will inspire you to make music that would normally be out of reach.

Rather than being confined to a fixed interface KRFT lets you create a surface that suits your musical needs whether you're building an experimental groove box or composing an entire track.

Use it standalone with its powerful internal audio engine or with your studio & MIDI enabled gear, such as Ableton Live or Logic Pro X.

---

◆ Produce & perform from one expressive interface ◆
KRFT is a canvas for your musical ideas that can be controlled and interpreted on the fly. Recorded loops, custom samples, dials and more can all be controlled from one unified interface. This structure lends itself to live play, each performance being unique and instinctive.

◆ Craft your masterpiece – piece by piece ◆
Build your canvas from musical cells, each shape with a different behaviour. Loops provide the core of your composition and dials, morphs and fills allow you to add flair and excitement. Group cells to give your track structure ― build as much or as little as you need.

◆ Tweak and refine your sound ◆
KRFT is all about customizability. Editing your recordings or sequencing notes is quick and easy in the Matrix and fine adjustments to the sounds and cell interactions can be edited directly from within the app – no need for external software.

◆ Control other apps, software and hardware ◆
- Send MIDI from KRFT to any DAW e.g. Ableton & Logic Pro
- Sync up with other devices and apps using Ableton Link
- AudioBus Audio & MIDI support
- Use KRFT as a source with Inter-App Audio
- Import your own samples and export your recordings to other apps

I've only been playing around with this for a day but I've already started creating the most interesting compositions I've made for a long time. It really puts you into a different frame of mind and is great fun to experiment with. The synth engine is actually very good sounding although I have not found a way to save my own presets? I'm sure this will come and I'm excited for future developments of this app. The developers are very talented.

Update:

MIDI out take this to the next level. Although the inbuilt synth is very good and I will continue to use it, the app is now unlimited in its sound potential! In additional to the dials sending values you can also use the morph controllers LFO to modulate any automatable parameter on a midi synth so the control you have is basically unlimited.
The more I use this I've come to realise the linear sequencing in most DAW's is a creativity killer. With this app you can retain your musical state of mind and easily experiment with variations to build your composition.

Update 1.6

Another great update, thank you! Loving the transform cells to create variations of the pattern and beat repeats. The Matrix tools make it much easier to edit and we can finally save the inbuilt synth presets. And everything is well designed and the app is rock solid.

Very powerful.

At the moment there are some glitches. The main one seems to be lag when recording realtime. It's difficult to play stuff into the sequencer fluently as you can on most other sequencers. I guess these things will be ironed out in time. From a creative point of view though it is really enjoyable and powerful. The ability to be able to set up a customised launchpad/control surface so quickly and the midi control over other apps such as gadget really expands the creative process. And that's scratching the surface. You can't help but play with this thing. It is very easy to understand (in my opinion). It would be great to see midi-in added to this at some stage but even now I personally feel that now I've used it there's no going back.

Developer Response

Thanks for your feedback! Regarding the "lag" make sure you have "quantize" turned off on the keyboard settings (on the bottom toolbar) - this should fix your issue!

The Sequencer I've been waiting for!

Where were you? Well, you're finally here. Fantastic. And an absolute bargain too.

Update: Well, I've had a few days to play around with this and I'm super excited about the possibilities to my work flow. I've been suffering from loopitis, where I'd get stuck constructing and editing a looping few bars of music - I couldn't get into arranging a finished track.

The set-up I now have totally cures this condition. I have KRFT linked with Ableton Live. I arrange parts in KRFT, which controls midi instruments, like my hardware synth DX7, hosted in Live. I then play around with arranging on the fly, in that totally intuitive, organic, inspiring and fun way KRFT facilitates so well. When I'm happy I'll record a KRFT 'jam' in Live, where I can then edit, fine-tune, maybe re-record, and polish.

This, to me is a revelation - the workflow approach I've been waiting for, for years. Arranging music is a joy, and feels part of the natural, musical process rather than before when it felt mechanical and laborious ... and well, not much fun.
