Ratings and Reviews
This is a lovely looking app and looked very promising. One feature I really liked is that you can input your child's spellings and then play games solely based on learning those particular words. You can play other games using a bank of words appropriate to your child's school age. I thought this was sure to be a hit and help with the dreary task of learning spellings, but my kids haven't gone for it so far....
Excellent for early readers!
My son is 5, in his F2 year at primary school and began reading and writing about 5 months ago. Like most eager parents I have bought many books to help him, read with him every night and generally try to flood his life with organic opportunities to read, write and spell. From shopping lists to birthday cards, we spend a lot of time encouraging him.
I have always been a bit sceptical of reading and phonics apps, thinking they're for lazy parents who would rather off load important jobs. I think I have changed my mind now! This app has been a real hit in our house, we sat together and Charlie chose which game to play, then I helped him find the letters on the keyboard as he spelt against the clock. Love the function that allows kids to move from easy through to hard spelling and especially like the falling letters on the missing letter game. My son managed to sit for 20 minutes without asking to do anything else and was very excited to have spelt 'rainbow' and 'knight'. We will definitely be using this lots in our house.
The three space themed games are:
This is to unscramble the letters to complete the word. It is quite hard for Mr K as he is still learning his words but it is a great challenge for him to find the correct word by listening carefully.
Fill in the missing letter to complete the word by tapping the correct alphabet letter. Mr K started with the easy level and managed to make good progress each day. It helps him to think how to use the letters to fill in the gap!
Spell the words before the time runs out. Mr K loves to play this as the word is shown to him and he just needs to type in the word. He did find it hard to find the letter on the qwerty keyboard but it’s good practice to learn this standard layout.
There is also a function to add your own school spellings to the game.
On the main screen, there is an option to design your own space rocket by choosing from the ranges of pre-design patterns. See them launch in the app.
So far Mr K has only managed to play with the easy level but he is very keen to play and learn with it. I think it’s great that the app follows the school syllabus and helps him to learn, step by step at his own pace. The app is inexpensive and it can be used for multiple users too. So my daughter can be set up as a new user in the app and use it too!
Up to six family members will be able to use this app with Family Sharing enabled.
