Finally - a great app

Hooray! With the new v7 app, the Standard has something to deliver it’s content and advertising that lives in the 21st century. The relationship between the online and ‘paper’ version (digital replica of the printed edition) isn’t 100% intuitive, but this app seems stable, looks ok and ... wait for it ... actually works. Even the puzzles load the correct puzzle - who knew that was possible? A huge step in the right direction.

Consistently poor

For a fantastic newspaper, edited by one of the cleverest people in the land and backed by some of its most inspired entepreneurs, it is a mystery why the ES app is so consistently poor. Should we scroll it? Or download it? Do we click on inset headlines that look like clickbait, rather than journalism? Oh there it goes again, crashing into smartphone oblivion. Just as the FT did a year or so ago, the designers of this digital mess should just own up, put their hands up and completely overhaul the experience. The lack of functionality means I never now read the newspaper...something I want to do!

Latest release seems more stable

I’ve updated my rating to 4 stars as the latest release does appear more stable. One tiny niggle, every time you swipe to the next page in the downloaded edition, the menu bar reappears forcing the page down, so you have to also swipe it back up to see the bottom of the page
