One of my most-used apps
I have used MM on a daily basis since the days of the iPhone 4. I love the fact that map data is stored in memory for offline use, but I still seem to have some issues transferring map data when upgrading to a new phone. Fortunately, waypoint data is saved separately because this is a huge advantage over other non-GPX mapping systems. I can add notes to waypoints and treat it as a mini GIS, although the ability to search on these notes in the phone is limited. I can however export the GPX file for separate analysis. The map licensing system is still suspect and I have lost access to so many useful paid-for maps after numerous iPhone and PC upgrades. I really should be able to have indefinite access to map data I have paid for!
It’s “Okay” but not great.
I’m having to use this app after the demise of ViewRanger. I have had this app since the early 2000’s when I initially used it for navigating when sailing on a Compaq PDA. It was probably the best navigational app at the time before app’s really existed.
Unfortunately it hasn’t changed or improved much since then so it’s not easy to use if your in a difficult situation (bad weather, short handed etc.) and it is expensive in my view, with annual subscriptions for national maps costing £20 and more. The graphics are still very 2000’s. You also have to pay an annual subscription for being able to sync between your devices (which in this day and age seems ridiculous).
It does however provide high quality images of OS and Admiralty maps, allows you to download map areas, so you can use it when there is no mobile signal, and is easy to create a route and has a good selection of OS and marine maps for the UK. It is probably one of the better navigating apps now VR has been bought over and removed from service.
Memory Map
I use Memory Map several times a week, whether to plan a route or record a track. Sometimes I forget to stop logging a track at the end of a walk and then drive off, leaving a long tail on the recorded track. With M-M it is simple to “split” the track and delete the unwanted tail.
Also I like the facility to download the whole of England and Wales in one go, not as lots of squares or tiles. It takes a while, but can be left overnight to complete the download. Having the full map means that wherever you go you can follow the map even if there is no signal.
I used to use ViewRanger, but since that was taken over by Outdooractive, it is not much use. Memory Map seems the best OS based app available for walking.
The only snag is it does not give Grid Refs, only position coordinates (lat/long).
