Not perfect, but great for Amiga fans
For me this isn't quite the best of the robotron clones because it is limited to 8 firing directions, which makes it frustratingly difficult with touch screen controls. However it is a trip down memory lane for Amiga and Atari owners, and they will be familiar with the 8 way limitation due to original joysticks only having 8 directions. I suggest an option for firing in any direction, although I realise this may unbalance the game play enough to necessitate a whole new game. Also perhaps a two player mode could be implemented, since that was a major part of the appeal of the original.
The return of an old friend
This is great. I used to play Llamatron about 20 years ago(!) and this takes me right back. Plays beautifully on the iPad. For quick blasts I'm using the Restart Best feature, for longer goes I start from level one.
For new players, it could do with the controls and objectives stating a bit more clearly. I almost missed the attract mode, so I bet a lot of people do. Buttons would also benefit from looking more like buttons, to increase discoverability. There are also a few bugs and quirks that have yet to be addressed. Just my $0.02.
I've always been a huge fan of Jeff's games back in the Amiga days, so immediately jumped at the chance of reliving this psychedelic experience.
The iPhone version is everything I could have hoped for, with mesmerising graphics and truly chaotic gameplay.
It does tend to get a bit intense, and on the iPhone screen it can sometimes be difficult to move the character accurately, but it's forgivable. I'd love to give the iPad version a go though.
There was an occasion where the game locked up at the beginning of the third level, for no reason. Quitting and reloading the app didn't fix it but a phone restart did. I'm not entirely sure if it was the app's fault or iOS being a pain, but thought I'd mention it regardless.
Jeff, you're a legend! Keep up the excellent work.
